Just a quick thought,
I was thinking back to the scene in the george Pal film where the three men approach the cylinder with the white flag and are promptly incinerated (or in the case of the book the ogilvy scene). I wonder what was going through the martians mind, i mean we know they see us as food, but at the same time they surely must have recognised us as intelligent life and so they certainly wouldnt view us in the same way that we might view..a cow for example. However, nor do they make any attempt to compromise with us, so in this case, are they simply a purely evil race?

they are concerned mostly for the security of their landing site, as thats when they are the most vulnerable. since they have no interest in making peace or communicating with humans anyway, kill the ones that get close until they are able to leave the security of their base.

Who knows what they think. Sorry for going Sh*te Trek on everyone but the martians may not have 'emotions' like us.
truth is they may do see us as cattle or sheep.
tomorrow if sheep were to walk and talk and carry guns how would you feel about them? Exactly, they are still sheep...

Zak: "What the... A flag? Hey Zork! Get a load of this! *laughing*"
Zork: "A flag? It's a joke, right? Tell me it's a joke."
Zak: "No, I think they're actually serious. They don't get it. Think we want to 'talk'. Heh. Watch this!"
BuuuuzzZAAPPPP!
Zak: "Just like holding a magnifying glass on a sand-ant, like when we were budlings!"
*laughter*
Zork: "Okay, enough fun. Back to the Fighting Machine. Where'd you put those darned instructions? I swear I'm gonna KILL those engineers when they get here!"

They're obviously not that intelligent, man would, in retaliation try to destroy them with nuclear arms therefore destroying the world, whether that's what they wanted? but, I'm sure Bush would be elected for another term in any case.

Why not? They brought their own humanoid food animals with them from Mars; obviously they think of us as cattle. If wolves and sheep could both speak, would wolves have any interest in talking to the sheep? Probably not. They're interested in eating the sheep, not talking to them. And as someone already observed, their primary concern would be in securing the landing site. It is at this time they are most vulnerable; after the first cylinder has opened but before they have set up the first Tripod. They could easily have been killed at that time; just chuck in a few lighted sticks of dynamite and it's all over. I think the scene in the movie ID4 (Independence Day) illustrates it quite well. The Americans capture an alien and try to talk to it. "Can we negociate?" They ask. "What do you want?" "To destroy you," the alien replies. End of conversation.

Actually, I just noticed that Wells specifically addresses this point in the famous passage on the novel's first page: "Yet across the gulf of space, minds that are to our minds as ours are to those of the beasts that perish, intellects vast and cool and unsympathetic..."

In the film I got the impression that the martian who put his hand on the girls shoulder was there to reason with them.
Imagine. After a terrible misunderstanding you send in your best ambassodor. xkcjxcjl. Skilled in the art of smooth talking. He approaches the humans in the house...he wants to say
'...that the white flag means war in our culture, we didn't mean to atomise them but they were asking for it! When three of us popped out to borrow suger...we came across a Jehovas witness. We get them on Mars all the time...can't stand em!!! Any we just want to say we would love to compro...'
But you know when your nervous the simple things are hard to say. Then...
...Thuk!!!
Gene Barry lobs a great big splinter into it's gullet. Poor bugger!
