I think the idea came from the fact that there's no animal on Earth that comes with three legs as standard, so the idea of a three legged walking machine was an alien concept at the time.
It could be down to a more Freudian matter: that Wells (and men in general) are drawn to the tripod image because, well..it's a tripod - a euphanism for a man's rather long "third leg", so to speak! Pen*s envy of space monsters, or some such.... (now I'm literally talking b'lox!!)

...There are so many jokes I could make...but I'll only make one.
Man 1: I say Professor Crumpetington, those tripod machines have a longer third leg than both of us combined.
Man 2: *yelling* No one's impressed!
Martian: Oolaa!
Man 2: That's what she said!

Why NOT Tripods?
At the time H.G saw anything with 3 legs is considered 'alien' to an effect, not of this Earth.

If you take a design like Jeff Wayne's then it would be hard to stand up!
If it had two legs then they would have to be large and fat, but with three it can evenly balance itself with thiner legs...

i guess also the Tripod design is nearly an all terrain vehicle? Land, Sea,Marsh Land. the nearest thing we have in modern times is the Almighty Hovercraft! after all this vehicle is extensively used by the US Military! so I guess the martians would adopt a similar approach? either that or they never thought the wheel was productive in use??

Why NOT Tripods? At the time H.G saw anything with 3 legs is considered 'alien' to an effect, not of this Earth. Exactly that is the point, which many cannot understand - also unfortunately not in Germany - (understanding does not permit this). Unfortunately many humans do not have still another too superficial thinking + are openly for all possibilities + ideas (see also here in this case RustiSwords: whether the understanding can reorient one's opinion?) @hail the Tripods interesting possibility of a conclusion. As the Bible already said: In principle one created on earth two more leggs and four more leggs. And there one still no three leggs way of life on earth knew, decided he for the idea with the three legs for a new extraterrestial way of life.

i thought it was because Tripods and how a Tripod would walk was something that baffled scientists at the time, and so wells used tripods to make the martians seem that much more advanced then us, just like the way they used sliding technologies instead of the wheel...
