With comic relief coming soon I remembered the discussion regarding whether the heat ray or a cylinder has caused the bridge in the Superbowl trailer to 'explode'. Remember someone stating the following?
"I am willing to put 20 pounds to charity if it turns out to be the heat ray and not a cylinder like ive said.I'm that confident. "
and
"Im really going to rip the p*ss out all the fanboys when im proved 100% correct. trust me i only bet money when i'm 1000% right."
Just wondering how confident you still are ? Given recent information about where the aliens come from (cells, the 'Already Here' tagline, Jawad's set interview with 'no spaceships' and the increasing possibility that it is a crashed plane that traps Cruise and Fanning in the house and not a crashed cylinder?).
Don't put that £20 into your wallet just yet!

I'd immediately assumed this was a heatray from the start. You can see the flashes on the bridge and also the way it buckles without the supports going. This is inline with expectation of what might happen with a heatray. I just cannot for the life of me see how it could be a cylinder even if it was invisible!

I would have said that the NO SPACESHIPS reference was that there would be no Goerge Pal machines.

[glow=purple,2,300]Hmmm.. I would say that no spaceships means exactly that. The George Pal machines weren't spaceships - they were war machines contained in spaceships/cylinders.
However, nothing is said about no cylinders! A spaceship is a craft that is flown through space, a cylinder (in WOTW context) is just a container that has been fired from a big gun.
If they're already here, possibly buried, a cylinder could erupt out of the earth, once some signal has activated it. The bridge could be hit from below, and be falling back on itself, with the cylinder to be added in post production...[/glow]

This is Spielbergs take on the part of the book where the narrator flees his home town as the Martians start to leave their crash site on the common...
