Following on from the War, how different would life be today? Would there be universal peace and love, or would we be just as we are now, but with alien technology creating worse wars and terrorist atrocities?
How would religion cope? And would there be pre-martian political groups who want to open up talks with the martian people & integrate them into society?
My own view is, unfortunately, rather bleak. As only London & surrounding areas was affected, I doubt other countries wouldn't see it as that serious (nothing to worry about - just give 'em flu!). We would take the left over technology and adapt it to our purposes. Other countries would be jealous and demand a share of it. Great Britain could have become a supreme dictatorship, and as spies infiltrate and nick the new technology, bigger and dealdier wars would take place. By now, we'd have invaded Mars and given them some PayBack!!
And what would happen if there was another "first contact" situation with a new alien race?
Thoughts, anyone?

In the squeal to my book the War I set the clock forward 100 years to 1999 when the Great British Empire has retaken the America's and rules most of Europe, and Asia.
There are three powerful proveninces, each in a feued to gain favour from the Emperor. The greater prize is an invasion of Mars, the first to conquer the Martians rules the world, and may even be able to overthrow the Emperor.
Of course, the Martians initial invasion of Venus proves an accurate theory. Mars is a barren world, devoid of any life, and witht he bulk of the Empire's forces focused on Mars and trapped their for a number of years, the Martians who have been manipulating events from colder regions on Earth up in the north (where it was rumoured survivors may have exodused to for the bacterial effect to slow down) begin coordinating another assult, from two fronts, one on the home front and one from Venus itself.
And what is the emperor's play in al of this?
An interesting mystery

I see your book is based in fact...with the small exception that america was and always will be an outpost of the original empire - it was never lost in the first place. I think you should go check and see who which holding companies own the Federal Reserve which of course owns America.
As good old Phil K Dick said 'The empire never ended'

If we managed to repel an attack and seize their technology it wold obviously be used to control the rest of us, whether it be to repel a further attack or meet the demands of the new government

Either way, we would be a hard nut for the Martians to crack! Our using their tech would make it all the more difficult to conquer us. Most likely we would also have developed nuclear weapons and be willing to use them on the Martians.
