I'm not really sure where the best place to mention this is, and I am sorry if its been mentioned before, but there was a small homage to WoTW in Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow.
First; when the robots are attacking New York, Polly Perkins runs into a phone booth and repeats some of Orson Welles' Broadcast.
Something along the lines of "The've reached 6th street.... now 7th street".
Also, the sounds the robot's lasers makes is identical to the heat rays in the War of The Worlds 1953 version.

[glow=red,2,300]Sweet! Thanks for that. Unfortunately Sky Captain didn't come to my local cinema So I have to wait for DVD. I'm hoping we get a Wells' Mars referance in the ERB A Princess of Mars film! [/glow]

I didn't like the reference in "Sky Captain". It just seemed so contrived. No longer an homage but a piece of ripped-off text. It would have been better if the CBS/Mercury Theater style of reporting had been used to create the environment of the 40's rather than just lifting the passage straight from the Welles script.
And her delivery was pretty poor as well. There was (and still is) a tremendous amount of power in the performance of the Mercury Theater actors. They were absolutely believable. Gwyneth Paltrow just couldn't pull that off.

She also said they were in sight over the Palasads [sp?]...too bad she didnt die....
and the lasers or whatever the machines were using to unearth the power things made the sound of the heat ray from the 1953 version

Sky Captain is on DVD now. I picked it up and was suprised to find out the origin of the movie and how low budget it really was! -It was marketed as a much bigger movie. It's an interesting tale and a fun documentary to watch.
The classic heatray sound effect was a nice touch. It was small enough that it was missed by me the first time I watched it.
