I know i'm not gonna make many friends by saying i love Independence Day But has anyone heard the radio play set in the UK during the events of ID4? It starts off with an Orson Welles soundalike telling us about the 1938 broadcast and how "it could never happen again... could it?" then after a Fox fanfare we go stright into a fictional BBC radio program called "UFO Watch" with Patrick Moore and Nicky Campbell (that bloke who's on Watchdog now) on a Sentry tracking plane. The whole first half is very well done and realistic, we have interviews with russian scientists, pilots flying to intercept and newsbeat reports. Probably the best bit is the destruction of London described by one of the corrispondants on the roof of broadcasting house... you hear the familier sounds of the alien weapon and he describes the destruction as he trys to get off the roof... then it goes dead It gets a lil silly in the second half (like the film) but there are some great performances by Colin Baker, Toya Wilcox and Patrick Moore is wonderful. If u can find it it is a very good tribute to the Welles play.

Don't worry mate, I've got ID4 UK on tape. I love it too. I love the introduction with the part about Orson Welles "War of the Worlds" and how it scared america.... it could never happen again, could it?
I like Independence Day, in the same way I love anything based on War of the Worlds, there isn't anything I don't like really. Plus I was only 12 when it came out so I got swept up in the coolness of it and have found it hard to shed my childhood love of it, despite it being a rip off.
Anyway, I think you can download an mp3 of ID4 UK off Kazaa and stuff. If not I'll try and get a copy and upload it to WOTWO

I looked for an mp3 copy for a while after my first copy got eaten (damn cassette tapes) but no luck... i finally got a copy from eBay and immediately made a cd and mp3 copy. The Beeb and Fox would probably not like it being hosted up here tho...

Agreed. Think I was 13 actually.
I'm 20 now, 21 soon.
If it's still available for purchase I don't think i'm gonna be able to host it, if it was out of production then maybe I could.

It would be nice if they released it on CD... I find it very difficult to filter out the tape hiss.

Independence Day has more in common with Earth vs the Flying Saucers and a few other classics. (Its loosely based on a novel called Armada.) Though the aliens themselves are very War of the Worlds in several respects. When I first saw the trailers for it and the fleeting glimpses of the armor form, it had me hoping for some more Tripod-ish battle scenes. Sadly there isnt a single real conflict with them in the movie. (Most likely cut for length.)
If a special edition DVD of the movie comes out maybee the broadcast will get put on it too. Sounds interesting and worth looking for.
How long was the broadcast?

It's a fun movie. I've bought the Soundtrack a year ago, great music. The only thing that bothers me is Will Smith. I don't like his big mouth and every thing that comes out of it. But, hey, it's a fun movie.

Will Smith added an unusual reaction to the alien invasion. I thought it was most human when he complained he was missing a barbeque cause of the alien invasion. I really think thats how most humans would react.

(actualy i was about 11) did you have the toys? anyay yeah, i bought this and thought it was awsome, i played it on my cassete and told my mum to listen to nicky cambell on the "radio" and what was happening. safe to say i was in trouble for a while At the start of the second half patrick moore starts off by reading "eve of the war" and saying that yesterdays science fiction has yet again become fact. it's cool how it ends before the aliens are beat. the movie should have ended that way.

I've heard about ID4 UK and i really want to listen to it, since i was around 13 when it came out. To be honest it's the first film that got me into Alien Invasion, for me what did it was seeing the Fighter Jets go at it with the Alien Attackers, great stuff.
It's a shame that some people don't see ID4 as a light not so serious film instead of always making comparisons with SS WOTW.
I did like the line by Will Smith "I'm just a little anxious to get up there and whip E.T's ass"

It's not bad at all, Iron Man. The part where Sir Patrick Moore has a punch up with an alien is a highlight! RAF Man: "EITHER I'M CONCUSSED, OR I'M WATCHING PATRICK MOORE FISTFIGHTING WITH AN EXTRATERRESTRIAL!" Nicely parodies Will Smith's encouter with the alien he shot down. Despite the fact that you can't see the action, the RAF pilot's chatter in some of the scenes drums up the tension nicely. It does finish rather abruptly though but thats probably because it was really an attempt to get people interested in the movie. An hour long advert, if you will. I taped it at the time and drag it out every so often for a listen. Here's a page with lots of info about the play... freespace.virgin.net/ty.po/ID4UK.html(Nice pics of some planes there for Iron Man ) I have one of the big ID4 Alien exoskeleton figures with bendy tentacles. It has a motion sensor in it and roars and opens to reveal the alien inside when it detects movement. Just thought I'd mention that.

I remember being in the crewroom of No.5 Sqn at RAF Conningsby in about 1997, and their being a diarama model of a Tornado F3 chasing an ID4 Alien Attacker on the wall.... wonder if the BBC guys gave it to them as a thankyou?
I used to have a copy of Independence Day UK, but I haven't got a clue where it is now!!! It was ace.

Anybody notice Peter Serafinowicz's name in the credits? The guy's a gravel voiced God of comedy and drama! ( Pete in Shawn of the Dead, Dwayne Benzie in Spaced, Darth Maul voice in Phantom Menace!)
