This is a excellent website about 'Horsell Common' in Woking, the landing place of H.G. Wells invading Martians from The War Of The Worlds (1897/98). HORSELL COMMON Website www.horsellcommon.co.uk/index.htmlThe pine trees on Horsell Common

Nice find Horsell. If I ever visit England I'm sure to go to Woking.

Yeah. Looks a really nice place to wander around apart from the WotW connection. Next time I'm down South I'l try and make a point of visiting.

The history is all very inaccurate- no mention of the martian landing at all!

Wonderful to see the woods have grown back so nicely. But then, it *has* been over 100 years since they were burnt by the Heat Ray.

I went to Horsell Common once with this picture that was taken over 100 years ago: I can't seem to find to find the god ugly metal thing stuck in the sand (aka. the Martian Cylinder) - it seems to have disappeared. Can anyone help me?

Ask those people in the photo... as they're still in exactly the same spot after after 100 years, they must have seen something.

I can't seem to find to find the god ugly metal thing stuck in the sand (aka. the Martian Cylinder) - it seems to have disappeared. Can anyone help me? Reminds me of the following sequence from "Monty Python and the Holy Grail": ~~~~~~~~ TIM: Follow! But! follow only if ye be men of valor, for the entrance to this cave is guarded by a creature so foul, so cruel that no man yet has fought with it and lived! Bones of four fifty men lie strewn about its lair. So, brave knights, if you do doubt your courage or your strength, come no further, for death awaits you all with nasty big pointy teeth. ARTHUR: What an eccentric performance. ... TIM: There he is! ARTHUR: Where? TIM: There! ARTHUR: What, behind the rabbit?

Pendragon must have used that photo as reference for their crowd scene, look at the crowds of people gathered about the cylinder, just as Wells described.. ;D ''The crowd about the pit had increased.... a couple of hundred people, perhaps...''
