Hi all, hope you are all well. I'm a frequent visitor to Woking and the surrounds to retrace the narrators footsteps. For those of you who live too far away to visit yourself have you considered Google Earth? (Don't worry I'm not selling it, it's a free download and I work for an airline anyway!). I've been having a fiddle with it this afternoon (fnar fnar!) and I've noticed the quality of the scans over Woking have been greatly improved so the detail of Maybury Hill, Horsell Common and the whole area is brilliant. Now you can follow the footsteps of the narrator from the comfort of you own armchair/desk/pub, tadaaa! If anyone wants the co-ordinates for Maybury Hill etc just let me know. Alternatively I'm thinking of opening an account with Google which will enable me to customise my own maps, that way I'll be able to cross reference them with the 1898 Ordnance survey maps and give you a better picture of what was where and when. All free of course! It'll give me something to do and keep me away from the pub (my liver would be very grateful! . What you think? Spleen.

I admit to being a bit of a Google Earth addict. Cross referencing the maps sounds like a great idea.
Go for it! :-)

Already on the case! Almost all of the buildings and roads on the 1898 survey map still exist so it should be fairly easy to do.
I'll keep y'all updated.

this is a tall order. how about one of you peeps from the woking/maybury hill area take some screen shots of the narrators trudge? using the google earth thing of course. it would be a great convenience to us yanks who know close to nothing about the geography of where the book took place yet are still immensely interested and also lazy.
thanks
