With the destruction of Big Ben, what would that mean to the defenders.
Would it have been a moral crusher or not?

Naturally the destruction of the Houses of Parliament (as Wells mentions) would have a demoralizing effect, a "morale crusher," certainly. Moreso than the destruction of a mere landmark ("Big Ben") that was attached to them. The destruction of the landmark World Trade Center certainly had a demoralizing effect on the U.S.. Of course in the Martian invasion, that was just a part of the much more serious devastation and depopulation of London as a whole.
