I think you mean the bit during the time that the narrator and the curate are trapped in the ruined house. The narrator described hearing six distant shots, and then after an interval six more. Then there is nothing.
There is no further explaination as to who was firing or what they were firing at. Its purpose within the story may be just to remind the reader that there is still a war going on outside the confines of the narrators imprisonment. It may also serve to emphasize the point that the narrator can expect no rescue from his imprisonment. No human force can defeat the Martians, and the guns he hears are probably a brave but futile isolated last stand, reinforcing the hopelessness of the narrators situation.

The old ones are the best ones. I think... As for the actual question, I'd agree with Stewymartian, and would add that it probably functions too as narrative 'colour', one of those trivial, incidental events that adds realism.

In one chapter (I can't remember which one) the narrator meantions something about six guns firing. What do we think these are? The 6 guns are mentioned in the chapter What I Saw Of The Destruction Of Weybridge And Shepperton. The guns are positioned just behind Sheperton Church and the gunners open fire upon the advancing Fighting Machines. "In another moment it was on the bank, and in a stride wading half-way across. The knees of its foremost legs bent at the farther bank, and in another moment it had raised itself to its full height again, close to the village of Shepperton. Forthwith the six guns, which unknown to any one on the right bank, had been hidden behind the outskirts of that village, fired simultaneously. The sudden near concussions, the last close upon the first, made my heart jump.".

I see.
Been a while since I've seen this thread - I nearly forgot about it. I was refering I think to a part were the Narrator was trapped in the house. And he heard 'Six Blasts' or something like that?

You mean..
"Then I heard quite distinctly a booming exactly like the sound of great guns. Six distinct reports I counted, and after a long interval six again. And that was all."

I'm baffled why the Wikipedia article on the novel en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_War_of_the_Worlds_%28novel%29...would mention this in the "Unanswered questions" section. As Stewymartian says, it's just a bit of descriptive color. Why would anyone think there's a mystery there? OTOH someone did question it enuff to start this thread. So what do *I* know?
