[glow=red,2,300]You know, the word 'genius' gets bandied about too much in my opinion and while I do agree that Steven Speilberg makes good movies is he really a 'genius'?
Is Speilberg the Da Vinci or the Ken Done of the cinema world? [/glow]

Genius? No. Creative? Yes, definitely. And yes, the word "Genius" is thrown about far too casually in media and entertainment these days.
Speilberg does what he's good at; entertaining people. It doesn't make him a genius though.

What VES said. I've really liked some of his flicks.. Jaws is still in my top 10 but his stuff is sometimes a little saccharine for my jaded pallette. 'CE3K' was another of his better films. Quite dark in it's way, with Neary's near breakdown as he struggles to cope with his life being tipped upside down. Then, the end, where he forgets about his family and just buggers off into space without a care in the world. Spileberg said recently that 'CE3K' would end differently if he did it now as he is now a family man. Perhaps that's why he's lost that slight 'edge' his films used to have. He even felt the need to tone down 'E.T' for the re-issue for gods sakes. His films now CAN be quite hard edged but there always seems to be a payoff. With 'Private Ryan' it was the flag waving stuff at the end which somehow never sat right with me no matter how noble the intent. I still have hopes that his WotW will be as dark as it should be.. I'm just wondering what the payoff will be, if there is one. Sure, put a message in the film but, instead of the usual thing, let Wells' themes shine through. He gets 12 out of 10 for imagination in some ways but in others it's a 1 out of 10. He really does have a thing about disfunctional families, doesn't he. A genius?..No. One of Hollywoods better, more creative directors?..Yes. Oh, who's Ken Done?

LMAO! When I read Bayne's post I thought maybe you guys might not know who Ken Done is. He's what I'd call an Australian "commercial" artist. He uses a lot of bright gaudy colours and simple shapes to paint landscapes and what not. Some people here really go for him, but I'm sure as Bayne would agree, there aren't many of them. He's not quite a national joke but he's not far off

Its all down to perspective, Kubrick was a genius to some as is Spielberg, if you compare Spielberg to Emmerick Spielberg looks like a true genius but then if you compare his own films his stinkers show themselves up and the genius title becomes uncertain.
I would say Spileberg is gifted and a master in his field but I dont think genius is accurate simply because Spielberg stumbled on a formula for a good yarn ages ago and has been milking it ever since, he owes a good proportion of his success to John Williams.

He's a genius to his fans ( and there are quite a few in the film industry who use the word). Since I belong to this first group, I admit I use the word as well....and yes I am fully aware i am being biased ;D

Spielberg is a genious of film making.
He has been going for over 35 years, and is still making great films. Spielberg is probably in my opinion the biggest contributer to the film industry in the past 50 years. Hes one of the greats.

[glow=red,2,300]Well if he's a genius, what innovations has he made? Other than making films that large numbers of people like, what has he contributed? What places him beyond the realm of master craftsman to artistic genius?

Ken Dodd versus the inland revenue at Graham House Court, Liverpool. His finest comedy moment.
