Just wondering from the footage we have seen so far, what you think are homages to the radio broadcast, the 1953 movie [besides the whole movie which some of you belive] and directly out of the book?
Orson Wells: -New Jersey references
1953: -Leather jacket -Alien hand?
Original Novel: -Tripods -Tentacles -Red Weed -Ferry Scene

* A tin of 'PAL' dogfood will be seen on a shelf at one point - an obvious homage to George Pal.
*The tripods will have very visible wires holding them up.
*Tom Cruise is actually wearing the same leather jacket that Gene Barry wore in the 1953 movie - which is why it looks so battered.
*In the spirit of the 1953 movie, 'Otto' will have no legs. *Cruise will force his traumatised kids to cook him some eggs just before the 'ruined house' scene.
*In an effort to please fans, the full text of the novel will scroll past at the botom of the screen during the entire running time of the film. That way, if you're annoyed about the changes Spielberg has made, you can just read the book
*HG Wells will cameo. His body is being exhumed as I type.

I hope they make Ray listen to the radio, which is broadcasted from a top of a skycraper in New York.

They'll have an elderly couple (Gene Barry & Ann Robinson) sitting down to a breakfast of fried eggs at their ranch just outside town.... "Cup of tea dear?" says Ann, "Yes please" replies Gene... "One lump or two ?" "Now now darling, this tea is Otto enough without me having lumps in it..." Boom Boom.

Curate:
That was hilarious. I about spit my afternoon coffee all over my computer screen.
I suppose one could make a long list of all the Steven Spielberg self-references in the film. He won't be able to resist pulling a Kubrick.
I'm putting money on at least one ET doll floating around somewhere.
Best, Quaderni

I bet Spielberg has an upsidedown R2D2 under one of the tripods like he did in CE3K.

LOL! Or on a TV in a scene a report showing a tripod striding over a desert with Jawa's scattering in all directions!

Maybe Cruise goes nuts and builds a tripod out of trash and his wife leaves him, and he has to use a ladder to reach the top of his tripod model because its over three feet tall.

Imagine them also with Gene satting Cruise on his lap after the film is over and sayin' "In my day son. We didn't do it like that."
