I know we have all seen at least the paintings that accompany Jeff Wayne's The War of the Worlds, we have all seen the 1953 hovering manta machines, Spielbergs tripods, and the rest. What I am asking is: When you read the book initially (if in fact, you read the book before seeing the movies), what kind of image appeared in your minds regarding the tripods? My own involves something resembling a cross between two medieval shields sandwiched together, mounting an oversized artillery gun on it's shoulder (Black Smoke launcher), with tentacles hanging from th front holding the heat ray. The legs were mounted in similar fashion to a helicopter's rotor blades, to allow slow walking, but then to allow the spinning motion of the legs Wells described without making the martian severely ill. The legs themselves were telescopic, to allow freedom of movement during spinning. The feet are soliod discs (a la the lunar lander). Don't worry. I will post a picture later if I have confused anyone.
I am just curious to know of other peoples thoughts regarding the tripods.

Hi there,
I've had a go at drawing a tripod from the book, but it's very difficult due to the brief descriptions that Wells gives. If you go to the fan creations section of the forum, you can see my picture and what people have said. My instinct is that they're a hood shape with some sort of waist before the three legs, but not with insect like eyes or a sprawling gate (as Jeff Wayne's tripods are.)
I'd love to see your drawing. There are lots of good interpretations, but I'm yet to see one that exactly fits the descriptions in the book.
Cheers.

I'd have to say that my own 'vision' of the Fighting Machines is/was somewhere between those in the Spielberg movie and those in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Vol. II.
Very much a "tall tripod" with a flared, rounded hood, at least two jointed arms and lots of "steely tentacles" of various sizes.
