Ah, now these are classic. They're the best suited for the story IMHO, and done by a master artist who also illustrated my other favorite book, "Dracula." The simplistic design, and the altogether eerieness of the pictures makes for some good imagery. My favorites are the illustrations for "In the Storm," "At the Window," and "Under foot." But they're all great. At the Window: I cannot find the others at the moment, but I'll post 'em if I do. Post here for all Gorey discussions!

What necessarily makes Gorey's illustrations any more or less "classic" than anyone else's?

Well, the general mood, the spideryness, the economy of line. The way the people, represented as they are almost entirely as tiny, almost stick-figures, conveys a creepiness, an unearthliness, that is difficult to match, or beat. Not impossible, but difficult.
I know you're a massive fan of Correa, Carioca, but however good one may think his drawings are (and I love them, don't get me wrong, they are superb) it doesn't mean that every other artist's interpretations are crap.

Exactly. It's not like we're saying that Correa sucks (God knows he doesn't) we're just saying we like this guy, too. And it's only my opinion that Gorey's the best suited for WOTW. It doesn't make anyone elses invalid at all.
Anyhoo, that's why we're here. To discuss Gorey. Fans and non-fans alike. Eh?

Hi all:
Just because I'm a Corrêa fan does NOT mean that I dislike the interpretations by other artists. In fact, I flipped through the new Gorey edition at Borders yesterday and agree that his work is intriguing.
In my Art Appreciation 101 class, I was taught to also understand the historical context of the material, rather than focusing on the subjective "I like it or don't like it" approach. This may better explain my affinity for the "classic" illustrations produced by the likes of Corrêa and Goble over 100 years ago over those of more contemporary artists.
There are no wrong answers here!
Cheers! Carioca

The first version of WOTW I read back in High School (nearly 15 years ago) was the Looking Glass version with Gorey's illustrations, and they've been my favourite illustrations ever since. The Correa ones are awesome as well, but the sheer terrifying and "alien" look was captured to a 'T' by Gorey. Nice to see that I'm not the only one that's a Gorey fan. Now all I need is to find a copy of this version or the reprint at a decent price Cheers, Dan M.

I could have had a paperback copy for much cheaper, but I decided to pay extra for the artwork. Heather
