Being an American, I've often admired the Royal Navy for its naming of its warships (King George V, Hood, etc.). However, can anyone explain how and/or why Wells would come up with "Thunderchild" as a warship's name?

Perhaps it sounded cool. Heres a bit of trivia for you. My family is directly related to the Bosun of Lord Nelson's flagship HMS Victory. Im going to the 200th anneversary celebrations of the Battle of Trafalgar there will be over 80 warships present, including some of Americas biggest stuff! The warships UK US and a host of others from europe and even russia will be there, this massive fleet will renact the battle (minus the live ammo of course!)

Yes. I understand in order not to upset our French friends, the 'battle' will consist of Red and Blue Teams. I expect they'll fling custard pies at each other like it's 'It's a Knockout' or something. Is Stuart Hall going to do the commentary? 'And the reds get one in.. Oooh Nelson is down HAAAAHAAAAAAAAAAA!'

What have the two opposing teams running about dressed as potates or penguins or humty dumty's or summat inane.......sliding around on rotating platforms, ar$ing about and making Stuart Hall follow through during one of his insane giggling bouts

I, being an Able Rating Aircraft Engineer in the Royal Navy (Team 800-Never Unprepared!), find the situation disgusting. Boiling down our nation's military history into a politically correct bunfight is horrifying. God damn it man, it was a naval BATTLE, not some 'we're all friends, fluffy-fluffy, lets all throw lemon bon-bons at each other, publicity-fest'!!! What is going on??? What next? A Battle of Britain flypast without RAF aircraft, as the Germans may be offended? Abolish the Royal Tournament because it costs too much? Oh. sorry, THAT LAST ONE HAS ALREADY BEEN DONE!!!! Sorry about the rant. I am just a blatantly patriotic member of the British armed forces who is sickened at the maltreatment of our proud history.

PS, anyone wondering about HMS Thunder-Child. As far as I know, or have been able to find out, there never has been one. However... She is described as a Torpedo-Ram. If you want to know what one looks like, point your search engines at www.battleships-cruisers.co.uk/hms_polyphemus.htmSee you later.

When I first heard the Jeff Wayne version when I was ickle, my first wotw experience, I thought thunderchild was a super hero, it does sound like one though.
There is a ship on star trek called thunderchild and its emblem is the victorian cruiser being hr'd.
