Shannon Stirnweis, illustrator of the 1964 cover and drawings from the book, took time to respond on what it was like to work with this project ... "Hi, in reply to your Email regarding the War of the Worlds cover. I recieved the assignment from my N.Y.C. rep. Helen Wholberg who got it from Whitman Pub.At that time I was doing Quite a bit of work for them.It was perhaps more interesting than most as I had previously read the book.At that time I customarily took photos of models posed for all illustrations, for this book I didn't follow that procedure and simply pulled the people out of my head.I think it worked, giving the final result a more fictional character.I did rough preliminary work about the size you see them reproduced, then did a finish 1/2 larger. Would I consider doing more Science Fiction work, unless the price tag was very high, probably not. I am currently involved in gallery paintings of the historic West." www.rubylane.com/ni/shops/relcoolstuff/iteml/T-199#pic9

Thanks for this information, Colton. And welcome to these boards! Very nice from Shannon to reply to your e-mail. This must be one of the more interesting cover designs. I've seen a lot of crap ones (with flying saucers, for example!)

The interior pictures are also very good! I don't like the FM design but the images I've seen are very good!
