If this is old news to some of you I apologise. George H. Smith wrote a book in the late 1970's titled the Second war of the Worlds, (when the Martians try again). It was set just a few years after the first and on Earth's twin, Anwyn(a parallel dimension) where magic was the norm, not science. I found it quite whimsical and endearing and like to reread it every great while. The characters were so endearing that I searched diligently for the books predecessor (Kar Kabala, I think) and also the third in the series "The Island Snatchers". The Hero, Dylan MacBride and his Love interest/sometimes antagonist Clarinda Mactague (High Priestess of Keridwen?) If you read this second of the series you will even find Holmes and Watson in there.

It has been mentioned before Scttabot but you are, to my knowledge, the first person to have good things to say about it. I haven't read it yet but I daresay I shall. Have you read Christopher Priest's 'The Space Machine'? It's a very interesting spin on the story from a new character's point of view and takes in some of the events on Mars before the invasion. Well worth a look.

How very strange; I had thought The Second War of the Worlds was a sequel to The Island Snatchers but, based on the copyright dates in the books, I see you're right. I had no idea I was missing the first book in the series.
Anyway, I enjoyed 2nd WotW, altho not enuff to have re-read it.

Sorry for the late reply. EvilNerfherder, I just ordered "The Space Machine." Thanks for the heads-up on it. I also ordered "Sherlock Holmes' War of the Worlds." (from Alibris?) Tsk. Amazon doesn't carry everything ya know. Lensman, thanks for the confirming advocation.

"This is the fourth novel in George H. Smith's Annwn series. These books (DRUID'S WORLD, 1967; WITCH QUEEN OF LOCHLANN, 1969; KAR KABALLA, 1969; SECOND WAR OF THE WORLDS, 1979; and THE ISLAND SNATCHERS, 1978)" The above is from: homepage.ntlworld.com/m.hodder/secondwarworlds.html
