Anyone got any thoughts on the Brown Scum wells mentions twice in the novel? I think it is some kind of effluent from the workings going on in the pit though if anyone has other theories I'd be interested in reading them. surely it couldn't be Martian poo could it? I know that the novel can be quite grisly in places but surely Wells wouldn't bother mentioning that and if he was that interested in that side of the Martian biology wouldn't he have told us when he was imprisoned in the house? So tell me your thoughts on this I'm interested.

Apparently the brown scum floating down the Thames was linked to the downing of the fighting machine at Weybridge. The FM did, of course, fall into the Thames after being shot down, spewing fluids and stuff as it 'whirled to destruction'. These alien fluids then travelled downstream, becoming the brown scum as it passed through central London.

Either martian or human! The Victorians are known for not bothering about clearing out the Themes!

Well, as the Martians didn't have a digestive system, they wouldn't have produced any poop. (How Victorian!) One presumes, however, that they had something equivalent to kidneys, and therefore did tinkle.
