I have often wondered at times if during the writting of the novel, if H.G had other title names lingering (there's that word again - twice in one day too).
We have taken it for granted now, some 100+ years down the line. But back then in many ways it would not have mattered, the use of 'The War Of The Worlds' as a title is similar (sorry) to the name TITANIC - you now what its about and you know what happens - like TWOTW, it brings over a certain romance and then horror.
I know its simple, but I wonder what gave H.G the nudge to use this title, did he have other's or did he always have this in mind.

It was originally called "Mars Attacks", but when he chased Jack The Ripper into the 20th Century in his Time Machine, he found out that the copyright had gone to Topps, so he had to go back and re-title it.
And that's true, that is! I heard it from a friend, who's mate knows a bloke down the pub, who saw it on the telly. And you can't argue with evidence like that!!

No,no,no. Wells was originally going to call it 'Independence Day', but he hopped into his time machine one day and realised that in around 100 years someone was going to rip off his story, tie it into an American holiday and call it that in a movie. He then decided not to write the story. Meanwhile Arthur Conan-Doyle had the same story idea after looking into a strange crystalline egg in an antique shop and wrote War of the Worlds under the pen-name HG Wells. Due to a mix up at the Copyright office, all rights were transferred to the real HG. With hilaaarious results. It's obvious really.

I thought HG wells and AC Doyle were the same bloke - he just donned a false beard for appearances as Doyle, and the 'tashe for Wells...

You've got it all wrong. He was going to call it Long Steely Cylinders, but he used his time machine and went into the future of 2005, and saw that Steven Spielburg was making a movie called War of the Worlds. He liked the title, so he went back in time and used it. Inevitably there is a time loop. The name War of the Worlds has no real conception! No fate but what we make John Conner!
