[glow=red,2,300]I definately wouldn't burn it... I'm opposed to book burning as a principle.
It has a reputation of being legendarilly bad, and not Ed Wood calibre bad either!
If it were me, I'd keep it as part of my collection, Unfortunately I can't afford to shell out for it at present or I'd make you an offer. [/glow]

And don't let the Ministry of Information get it either!
We are not at war with Mars- we are at war with Venus. We have always been at war with Venus.

Six weeks after "The War of the Worlds" finished it's run in Pearson's magazine, astronomer Garrett Serviss presented his first forey into the real of fiction "Edison's Conquest of Mars".
Therein, after the failure of the Martian invasion, a team of noted scientists; Lord Kelvin, Wilhelm Roentgen and Thomas Edison were tasked with back-engineering the technology from the Martian war machines and mount a counter-offensive with their electromagnetic propulsion spaceship.
Ultimately, "Edison's Conquest of Mars" had more in common with the fantasies of a century before than with the scientifiction of the turn of the Century. The tentacled, inhuman monsters that Wells created were replaced merely grotesque and huge humanoids. They were not "intelects, vast, cool and unsympathetic" but were genuinely "evil." These giants had come to Earth before, building the pyramids and taking humans as captives. Of course, the first captive to be freed was a pretty Human girl.
I believe that Serviss had not intended "Edison's Conquest of Mars" to be a sequel but had started working on it some time before, writing in a style that had been used for space fantasies for centuries before. But when "War of the Worlds" was published, he re-wrote a few elements here and there to link his work to Wells's much better work so he could ride on his coattails.

Hey Everybody! In an earlier thread, Krys666 mentioned a book called 'The Second War of the Worlds,' apparatly a sequel to the original book, where the Martians have aquired an immunity to Terrestrial Bacterium and Viral infections and have researched and created New Technology. Any one here read the book? My eyes popped out when I saw the mention, and, If any one here has read it and gives it a good review, I will be on Amazon and Ebay searching for it as quick as you can say Ulla! I didn't read but I'am intrested in the book if you found it let me know. I have the original at home in English and dutch

> is this available to buy? As an etext? There is someone selling one on E-Bay for $174.90. ( cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=29223&item=6939335438&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW) His copy is a First Edition #589 of 1500. No one has bid on it yet. I have the same edition, 553/1500, but mine has most of the dust jacket intact. I don't remember how much I paid for mine. It was much less than $174. I haven't been able to find any links to an online version.

I’ve got ‘The Second War of the Worlds’ too, picked it up for pennies from a second hand bookshop in Brum. It’s pretty pointless, adding nothing to the original. Worth having a look if (a) you’re a completist; and (b) you make no actual effort to buy it, but simply see it in a grot shop for next to nothing. A WotW sequel no-one’s mentioned is Willie Rushton’s ‘W G Grace’s Last Case’, a very funny novel in which the great cricketer W G Grace teams up with Dr Watson (Sherlock Holmes having, as Grace puts it, ‘Gone over the Thingyback Falls’ some time earlier) to solve a very odd case. It’s just an excuse for Rushton to make loads of gags about duplicitous politicians (the PM, Lord Salisbury, is a paranoid nutcase who always appears in disguise), aristos (such as the twins Castor and Pollux Vilebastard – ‘It’s pronounced VILLIBART!’ they constantly insist) and Victoriana in general, chuck in virtually every famous late Victorian you can think of (both real and fictitious – for example, Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde pop up years before the ‘League of Extraordinary Gentlemen’ was even a gleam in Alan Moore’s eye) and generally have a romp. Even H G himself, together with Jules Verne, make cameo appearances toward the end. It also features copious quantities of Rushton’s marvellous scratchy ink drawings. I love it, but it may not be everyone’s cup of tea…
