Roger,
Sorry this is not much of a reply but thanks very much for the information and taking the time to write this fascinating technical detail. Although I did not reply to your above messages they were 'taken onboard' and appreciated.
As you are very well versed in military matters, there is a thread on ordnance in the General thread if you would care to have a look.
Cheers, Phil

Greetings All! I've recently been looking at this subject and have been interested in the replies in this thread. I'd like to put forward the 'Alarm' class Torpedo Gunboat as the model for the original ship (not the one depicted on the Jeff Wayne cover). With the slight exception of the "ram", these vessels seem to fit the bill and were current at the time of writing (11 vessels launched 1892-1893). If Wells was even more up-to-date on his naval knowledge, it may even have been the 'Dryad' class he used as a basis, 5 vessels launched from 1893-94. Both classes can be seen at www.battleships-cruisers.co.uk/r_n_gunboats.htmWhat do you guys think?

Not a bad idea, I've been looking at the torpedo gunboats too. I like HMS Seagull (scary name... not):

Hmm, I think the pictures of HMS Niger fit much better: I can really picture this vessel in the scene...
