When the top unscrews on the cylinder and the heat ray emerges, the hole is only just large enough for the heat ray to emerge. So what about the war machines? They couldn't have just emerged through that hole. So how did the war machines emerge from the cylinder?

They were assembled in the pit.

well there was a size differential between cylinder and machine probably, but I like to believe that they had one active machine inside the cylinder as like a scout while the others had to be built.

They were assembled in the pit. Come to think of it, I never thought of that. I always assumed that they were assembled in their cylinders and then appeared.

Perhaps the heatray belonged to another type of machine, a slender defence tower, that is used to protect the War machines while they are being built in the pit. Erm, no, I'm just clutching at straws now!

I thought that the heat ray was on an articulate arm that comes either from inside the cylinder attacthed to no machine, or in the pit and it's job is to defend the martians. In the book I thought they used a mirror to see outside the pit. Or use the mirror to reflect the heat ray...

Right, Krys. It looks like the machines were part built on Mars and were assembled in the pit whilst a heat ray cannon on an arm or crane defended them. They certainly made sure that the area was clear before they started.

I always thought that there was the additional heat ray defending them.
So they had three heat rays for their machines and a defense one.

The reporter in the movie explains that there's been a lot of activity at the meteor site during the night - lights and dust, as if they were digging themselves out. I always assumed the ships were complete inside the meteor casings and internal machines dug the way out.

I wonder if in a subsequent invasion, such cylinders could be nuked before they even come out...a small nuke would work without shielding. After they come out a multi-megaton H-bomb would most likely be the only thing that might stop them...

Or could long range artillery be effective with some soldiers hidden amongest the plants plotting the shots?

It would make a very short film though ;D

Indeed. ;D
Having a think before.
If the War Machines are assembled in the pit, how are the parts of it taken out of the cylinder and placed in the pit? Surely they wouldn't risk lowering the heat ray. And the 'wing' of a War Machine wouldn't be able to fit through the gap the appears from - it barely fits itself.

It could have been a pilot hole, just so they could assess the area before they opened the real hole and made themselves vunerable? ??

Indeed.
That's what I thought to.
