Back in the days of vinyl records and cans of film; long before the days of rentable videotapes and DVDs, I resorted to envisioning my favorite George Pal “War of the Worlds” movie scenes—and making up some new ones—in my head and to the sounds of 60’s and 70’s Rock, Pop, and R&B music (otherwise, I was lucky to catch the movie on TV but once a year). The movie was so full of amazing special effects sounds that I could not help but hear them in the day-to-day background music of my youth. Anyone else? Which pieces of music did you use?

I should have added the titles of some of the music that I enjoy for this fantasy: the album "Relayer" by Yes; "Reflections" by Diana Ross & the Supremes (what a weird tune! Just listen to all of the instrumentals--right out of 50's Pal Sci-Fi!). There is, of course, the obligatory mention of Holst’s “Mars” in “The Planets” Great program music—no slight intended—lots of people sampled his music for the TV and movies; Stravinsky, too.
