So far we are aware of the Fighting Machine (Tripods), indications of the Heat Ray and Red Weed. But other issues are a little hazy such as cylinders. So what other technologies are we to see in SS version.
Does this film need any sort of 'Alien' - sorry had to use that as the term Martian is not exceptable in Paramounts version - Flying Machine(s), Handling Machine(s). If he is wishing to stay with some key eliments of the book he should use them, but this is Hollywood.

Handling machine ...Yes I think we will need to see it, as it plays a major part in the book and it is essentially the "people collection tool for the 1st national bank of blood)" don't forget it has to be shown that the martians built machines for different purposes I think the handling machine will look COOL in the confines of the suburbs/city ..now thats the more scary image ...*HM barreling down a road/bridge stepping on cars and chasing people the flying machine will be put in for hollywood glitz and to probably spruce up the action scenes were a Tripod would be impractical..(stairs for example , although I wouldn't really deem it necessary ...more eye candy really. what we won't get to see and I am intreiged by this is - The small robotic sort of bulldozer (thats how i imagine it anyway) seen in the pit in the book (the one that doesn't appear to be controlled by a martian)

*although depending on how it is done ..I really don't want to see a serious version of the Mars Attacks bipod scene ;D ;D ;D Oh I really wanna see how they portray the Mars Launcher GUN, and I hope we get to see it firing/ the first launches of the cylinders ....It would be even cooler if we saw the first cylinder loading into the breech readying for launch...ideally over the intro music and titles

I agree about the handling machine...in an inner city environment with tall buildings, a tripod fighting machine will look less impressive and rather cumbersome, whereas a handling machine will be presumably be able to travel at high speed round corners and in more confined spaces.
Alas, I can envisage Velociraptor type skidding round corners, blundering into a restaurant and coming out covered in kitchenware type scenario being involved here...*bleugh*

But when Pirates of the Carribbean breaks down the pirates don't eat the people.

I recall in the interview the producer said they wanted Tom to be captured by a tentacle, so that means deff. 100% tentacles on fighting machines right? Actually dumb question...I knew they had tentacles when they filmed at Athens!
Anyways I would need to see cylinders to make it War of the Worlds. Even if it is beyond anyone's expectation: no cylinder, no deal in my book. That's coming from someone in the movie lol

I think there will be a trans-dimensional portal in there as well ;-)

The small robotic sort of bulldozer (thats how i imagine it anyway) seen in the pit in the book (the one that doesn't appear to be controlled by a martian) I'm glad you mentioned this as I had forgotten about that curious machine from the book. It may only been mentioned very briefly in the book but in certain ways it's as important as the FM and the HM as both of them are controlled by a life form were as the digging machine is not, or so we are lead to believe. To quote the new article with the art designers:
Will there be the big cylinder opening bit that’s a staple in “War of the Worlds” films and knock-offs?
Rick Carter – A version of it. It’s not been lost. That moment that you think that you want because you saw it that way is not lost in this new, imaginative, re-adaptation.
So cylinders, or something like it, are in the movie.
