The 1953 WOTW film on DVD has now been discontinued to make way for this June's release of the 'Special Edition'.

Standard operating procedure in the video business. You can still probably pick up a copy of WOTW from various places becuase there are still copies in stock, but why bother when the SE is coming out.

The details for SE DVD haven't been released yet, Krys. I heard somewhere (can't remember where) that there *may* be commentaries .. not impossible as both leads are still alive.. and some behind the scenes stuff. I expect there'll be the usual cast and crew bios as well.

They could have also waited for the new Paramount film and releaced them both together. Because the new film may be a sort of continuation, with the caption "They're Already Here". And also with a special version the TV series as well!

I hope thay we get the movie in Widescreen this time- it must have been filmed in widescreen...?
I guess a 5.1 mix is totally out of the question (they didn't even have stereo then-or multitracks- so there's absolutely no chance of having all the audio tracks seperate....)

Actually Donal I heard it was filmed in a ratio close to fullscreen, as many filmes were back then. The widescreen formats came to the fore during the 50's. The VHS copy of the movie I have (dated 1995) actually has a stereo sountrack (it's probably a remix of the old track).. the heat ray noises come at you from different speakers.. sounds good. They could do a 5.1 mix anyway.

5.1 surround mixes for older movies are generally made by taking certain samples from the original soundtrack(s), adjusting equalisation and phase characteristics to eliminate (unwanted) phase problems, then placed within the 5.1 panorama. Holophonic effects are then added to increase depth perception, which is also used for psycho-acoustic panorama on 2.1 mixes. Lots of hard work but great for bringing old films up to date. Let's hope they've done the same here.

No.. I believe it's been pushed back til November. No idea why. Who knows.. perhaps they need time to get a commentary sorted or something.

Maybe so it get's sole attention, instead of beeing burried by a kazillion other WotW DVD's coming out in June. November eh? Maybe Haloween? :-) As to the format, I'm pretty sure it is fullscreen, like Nerfy said. By the way, I happened to look up the old DVD on Amazon today, and it listed a price of 30-someting dollars. WTF is that about?

Does anyone know when it is coming out and if the jolly people of britian will get to clap eyes on it. Of course we'll see it here in the UK. If they have pushed it back till November, this is when the Spielberg version will be release on DVD, so they can cash in together. Though Im still curious as to why November for the 53 when they can still make money off the DVD SE during June/July.

It's fullscreen. There was no Widescreen when it was shot. That would change the year after ..1954 when Fox introduced Cinemascope in "The Robe" and changed movies for ever. WOTW just missed the Widescreen revolution. BTW there will be a commentary by a Film Historian on The SE. The reason for the move is pure marketing..they figured they would sell more with a tie in with the SPeilberg DVD. And also it is just in time to cash in on Holiday sales. They figure they can sell more with a heavy promotion tie in with the current film right before the Holiday season. it's that simple.
