Why did they never use regulars and use Marines instead? There is not too much Marines in comparison to regulars so why use such an elite force?

Actually it make sense if you know Southren California geography. The closest troops to where the Cylinder comes down would be Marines,even in 1953. Even back then, the nearest Army base with sizable troops would have been Fort Ord, a good Three hundred miles away, wheras Camp Pendleton would be only a hundred miles away from the Tehachapis which is where the cylinder came down. The Marines had bases a lot closer.
