A clip of George Pal's WOTW was used on the ABC/Peter Jennings 2-hour broadcast of UFOs Thursday night. The clip I remember was of the cylinder crashing into the ground and burrowing up to a house. Other clips used included EARTH VS THE FLYING SAUCERS, THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, et al.
As for the ABC broadcast itself, it was relatively good, more even-handed and more in-depth than the other USA tv "investigations" of UFOs. Most of the other tv probes into UFOs were very sensationalized, superficial and tended to be like the supermarket tabloids to get higher tv ratings (i.e. the "Alien Autopsy" fraud).
Overall, the ABC broadcast tended to state that while many UFOs are of non-extraterrestrial origins (atmospheric causes, secret military aircraft, civilian aircraft, etc.), there are many which cannot be explained and could be not of this earth. The ABC broadcast seemed to agree with many UFO witnesses who were very credible such as military pilots, airline pilots, scientists, police officers who witnessed UFOs and said that they weren't swamp gas, birds, blimps, etc.
I was disappointed that ABC didn't include the late "Right Stuff" astronaut Gordon Cooper's claims that as a fighter pilot in West Germany, he was scrambled to intercept formations of UFOs which were originally thought to be Soviet---until they flew off at high mach speeds---impossible 55 years ago. Also, Cooper claims when he was a test pilot at Edwards Air Force Base, he saw photo negatives of a UFO which landed there. He gave the negatives to USAF intelligence and never heard about them again.
Another omission was the "Faded Giant" incident, the subject of a lengthy NEW YORK TIMES MAGAZINE article, in which in the 1970s, UFOs hovered over nuclear weapons bunkers at B-52 bomber bases and a Titan ICBM silo---later inspection of the Titan revealed its targeting system had been altered---the USAF codename for this being "Faded Giant".
Another omission: astronaut Dr. Edgar Mitchell's saying he's never seen a UFO, but his sources in NASA, the military and aerospace industry say the US government has never revealed what it really knows about UFOs.
Another omission: the videotapes of UFOs buzzing a formation of Mexican military helicopters during an airshow. Thousands of spectators witnessed the buzzing in broad daylight and many videotaped the incident which caused a national sensation in Mexico.
Another omission: the giant triangle that silently glided over Belgium in the 1980s. The Belgian Air Force later released F-16 jet fighter cockpit videotapes of the triangle on the F-16 radar scopes as they try to intercept the triangle.
DVDs of the broadcast are available from ABC.
PS.....I originally just wanted to mention the Pal WOTW film clip, but once I got started, I went off on a tangent on the entire ABC broadcast. I should have posted this on the non-WOTW board. My apologies.
