February 17: Original WAR OF THE WORLDS invades DVD
Fango has learned that Paramount Home Video will release a special-edition DVD of 1953’s THE WAR OF THE WORLDS to tie in with this summer’s release of the Steven Spielberg-directed remake. Directed by Byron Haskin and produced by George Pal, the Oscar-winning (for visual FX) alien-invasion epic will be supplemented on disc with audio commentary by stars Gene Barry and Ann Robinson, a historical commentary by Joe Dante, genre expert Bob Burns and Fango contributor Bill Warren, on-camera interviews with other WAR veterans and additional special features. No release date has been scheduled as of yet; we’ll keep you posted. —Michael Gingold
After my usual complaints about DVD double dipping I am going to pre order this one.

Hee hee, maybe someone from Paramount read my posting back in September when I said it would be a good idea to cash in on the new film by releasing a Special Edition of the 53.

[glow=red,2,300]Or maybe they noticed the scathing attack on their policies in my movies epilogue webcomic?
Either way I'm very excited. [/glow]

I do hope they give us a better cover than what has been availlible so far. The first DVD release showing 2 machines over a modern dau image of Los Angeles was terrible. The latest cover showing the Earths surface with War Machines was better, but I really would like to see one of the original posters or day bill posters used for the cover, taking the look back to the 50s.

I hope they have interviews with the original cast. "Back in Nineteen Dickety two..." Or even better..."Well I was titled 'Running Boy 2' in the movie...and they paid me in ice cream. I never really met Anne Robinson or Gene Barry, and I don't really remember anything...but had I, there's a good chance I'd of remembered it."

I bought the VHS many many years ago, and resently my dad copied it to DVD, because I didn't want to buy the DVD since I was expecting a SE coming out. Just like JonT was hoping. What foresight we have! :-)
