I wonder why they cut out any reference to the martians wanting us as food? Im sure the 50's mind set could have handled it, one of the greatest twighlight zone episodes was 'to serve man' about a race of beings that wanted us as food and we loose, big time! So why oh why did they choose not to include one of the best and most chilling aspects of the book?

So why oh why did they choose not to include one of the best and most chilling aspects of the book? I suppose the real question is if they thought the '50's censors could have handled it! Since the Martians in that movie don't talk, I think it would have been difficult to include that plot-point without showing it. As far as I know for the period, while you could talk about people getting eaten, it was really, really hard to show people getting eaten. The other factor may have been cost - they'd probably have had to make more than one Martian to do those scenes and their budget was stretched pretty thin already on 'machine' effects. Just my two cents.

You would have a hard time with the censors with that one. Even the 1938 Radio broadcast only had a brief reference to that with the Narrator saying when he listed a whole bunch of things he had seen from the ruined house "i saw how the Martians feed".

The original The Thing from another world had a bloke upside down with his throat slit having his blood drained, so the alien Thing could propagate its spawn with human blood.
Why couldnt we have Gene Barry see the martian drag a limp human form into view only to see the horror on Barrys face as he watches (we dont get to see it happen) and later when hes with the other Cal Tech boffins he tells of the horror, the martians want our blood!
Its wouldnt exactly be graphic.

[glow=red,2,300]Maybe it was because of the rating? It's amusing seeing the old ratings of films like THEM and to see them now as PG or G [/glow]
