anyone notice, best place to see it, is with the martian war machine next to the farmhouse, that when it hovers, sparks are all over the grounds?

It does not hover, it stands.
The Fighting Machine in that movie has 3 magnetic legs.
so its held up by magnetised beams, the soparks you see are from those beams.

I heard long ago about how they were going to make that effect last through the whole movie but didn't have the expense, but I haven't until just recently noticed that they actually did it for that first appearance. If they had kept it...the effect would have made it that much cooler.

That's why they stopped using it. -Gnorn The sparks were generated by arc lamps, according to Ann Robinson, & it wouldn't surprise me that a set caught fire even though they took a lot of safety precautions. The lamps must've also generated a lot of RFI & must have spoiled reception of any nearby radio & TV sets.
