From New York metro.com newyorkmetro.com/nymetro/news/people/columns/intelligencer/11167/index1.htmlWith on-set Scientology. In the upcoming Steven Spielberg remake of War of the Worlds, one family fights for survival when Earth is invaded by Martian war machines. But on the set of the movie, there’s been an invasion of another sort: Scientologists! Tom Cruise, the film’s star and the religion’s most well-known adherent, has set up a Scientology tent with a volunteer minister. “It’s a gift from Tom to the crew,” says Lee Anne De Vette, Cruise’s sister and spokeswoman. “You can receive what’s called an assist there,” a Scientologist practice that, as she describes it, seems to be a glorified mini-massage. “If someone has an injury in a certain part of their body, if their back is killing them, they can come in and get an assist. It’s something that helps the body get in better communication with itself.” Actual Scientology literature is available, too, in case “someone walks in looking for a solution.” All of which has caused a certain amount of grumbling.Perhaps Cruise should switch characters and become the Curate (presuming they have one in this revision). Ho ho, what fun that would be! ;D

'I shall burn them with the Book of Dianetics' doesn't have quite the same ring to it though..

Oh God! Of all the sodding people in Hollywood - Cruise has to get his crummy hands on this.
Bet there'll be some scientology propaganda shoved in Worlds somewhere!

Spielberg is a Jew, and from what I've seen, a practicing one. I seriously doubt he would allow Scientology to sneeze on his movie, let alone get a word in.

Ironicaly battlefield earth was written by L Ron Hubbard, the grandfather and inventor of scientology, the book is quite good but the film was absolutely dire.

Question, given Wells' beliefs and faith in science, do you think he would be a scientologist? just a thought.

"Battlefield Earth" was, deservedly, one of the biggest bombs in film history. I am sure the Speilberg, a practicing Jew, and Miranda Otto, a practicing Catholic, were thrilled by this... And apparently the Scinetology wierdness was one of the main reasons that Nicole Kidman broke up with Cruise.

Actually, I read some of Hubbard's stuff a few years back.. Battlefield Earth and so on, I mean.. I didn't think it was that bad, as novels go, but maybe it was a mistake to get a 'disciple' to do an adaption....

Exactly it was, any one read mission earth? its 10 volumes thick but is actualu quite addictive once you get into it. When a sci-fi writer starts a religion it cant be a good thing.

Mission Earth was the other Hubbard work I read.. Took quite a while to get all the volumes together from the library. It was a fairly decent read.

You guys heard of Xenu? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xenu(Sorry, can't seem to get rid of that double-link. Click on the bottom one) Read that and then ask if Wells would have been a Scientologist. You'd also better read this article: www-2.cs.cmu.edu/~dst/Fishman/time-behar.htmlDo not laugh at Scientology, it is serious stuff. And don't even THINK of joining it. Or if you must entertain the possibility, I urge you to read every page of Operation Clambake first: www.xenu.net
