Please, anyone, if they are smart enough, tell me how the martians did that thing with the magnetic fileds or whatever. And how did they explain the way the flying machine hover/fly. And any other smart, explanations ii except, i am curious in science, the topic i am most into now and for looking up are, tesal coils... How did the martians see Do they comunicate??? How does their shield work??? Why didn't, after the first few cylinders, didn't the army use bombs when a cylinder has first landed? The martian shield is only on the flying machine? Right? So blowing up the cylinder and the martians would kill them. OR when they first get out of the cylinder, surly a heat ray couldn't reach really high up???

[glow=red,2,300]Well.. for levitation via magnetic field the machine would have to reproduce a mirror image of the earths magnetic field pushing each in opposite directions (I've seen this done to levitate a frog on a science documentary)
As for the cylinders, I expect as in the book the landed martian forces would have to protect further incoming cylinders from enemy fire. [/glow]

How they see: I think its along the Red-Blue-Green principle of todays tv technology. How they communicated: Either by telepathy or the "Scree" sound after their heat ray was used. (I think) Their shield: An electromagnetic field. repels all matter? All else fails. "Its in the script." ;D

Sorry if this is realy mundane and useless but in 2002 some Japanese brainiacs actualy created the worlds first matter repelling force field, it repelled the bombardment of hydrogen atoms. Big things start with little steps. Force fields will end all wars you know, until some smart war monger finds a way around them or some smart arse uses bio or chemical weapons. Im sure you have all heard of the philadelphia experiment (no, not the cheese, tut ) where the American navy experimented with electro magnetic anti radar shielding in the 60's. If you believe the hype and bull they actualy sent the ship through time but it actualy looked more like the shield collapsed and essentialy frying most of the crew through the over burdoned emitter grid throughout the ship. So force fields are nothing new and entirely possible, just not that usefull at the moment.

I thought the power cuts in the film was interesting. It was blamed on magnetism coming from the pit. It shut all the electics and mechanics down.

yeah, EMP. Was this the first movie that had a EMP in???!

Perhaps if the Martians tried again, the Earth forces would simply drop nukes on the newly landed cylinders before they opened. We would have cracked their technology enough to make it much harder for them. We would have their heatrays and forcefields by 1988 and later. We would also use very high yield hydrogen bombs vs hiroshima type atom bombs. I wonder if a 10-100 megaton hydrogen bomb might not just burst through the Martians' forcefields. Also, we could send missiles armed with common bacteria to Mars to finish what the Martians have started. Perhaps by 1970 we could have sent thousands of bacteria-laden missiles to destroy the ecosystem of Mars as a preventitive countrerstrike.

This kind of defense is useless against THAT kind of power!

What ecosystem? That's why they were coming HERE,to take over ours.

under the machines you can see very faint blue lines that aid the hovering. I believe there are three of them (refering to the tripods) but three would help make a stable flight, three point of contact with the earth from the same point, make a very solid structure.

TheRedWeed is quite close to the truth. The Martians' machines did *not* use magnetic levitation to "float" in the air. Rather, they used 3 beams of force which held up the war machines as though they were legs... a subtle reference to Wells' novel. At least, that's what was said by a close friend of mine who has read extensively about the making of the film.
