I remember not liking Season II back when it came out; I followed I eagerly, but stopped watching after a few eps of II.
David Faltskog very kindly sent me DVDs of II, and I watched a bit of it last night. I do not like the changes to the show - I do not like them, Sam I Am.
My gripes, in order of most forgivable to least forgivable:
-Hair. Yes, that's very forgivable. I probably would quickly forgive McCullough's ratty perm and Blackwood losing his razor if they did not go hand-in-hand with gratuitous character 180-degree whacked-out personality changes (below).
-The world. Whatinhell happened to the world? In a few months, it goes from the usual world to a post-apocalyptic ratty mess. No explanations.
-The aliens. Part of what I liked about I was the gurrellia aliens with their strange suits and the humans who break out in radiation sores when they house aliens. The whole idea that the aliens were constantly battling Earth microbes was a nifty one, too. Now all of a sudden we have aliens who are perfectly at home on Earth, and who a friend of mine characterized as the alien versions of Helga and Herr Flick.
-Killing off my two favorite regulars. That's a personal gripe, which is why it isn't higher.
-The hugely expanded role for Debbi. She was an occasional annoyance in I that I could put up with, but she's the Ensign Crusher of II. Plus, I get this really disturbing feeling that someone involved in II's production had a hard-on for barely-pubescent blond girls.
-Bumping off the native american and the black guy, leaving us with a lily-white cast.
-McCullough's change. When she wakes up in the middle of the night in The Second Wave and grabs a gun, I had a "What did you do to McCullough?" moment.
-Blackwood's change. What happened to the New Age pacifist vegetarian scientist? I swear, I would have been not a whit surprised if it turned out that he had been taken over by an alien.
Well, there are my Season II rants...
