Thanks to those lovely people at Asylum, I have gotten hold of a few other flicks which I, as a confirmed fan of their work, think deserve a mention.
This time, I'm going to post a short review of Asylum's latest (out December 13th) DVD, King of the Lost World. This one continues their M.O. of providing up to date re-tellings of classic works, sprinkling them with elements topical popular culture, then adding a few other trademark touches (namely; gore and nudity!)
The movie is based upon Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's classic work, The Lost World.
A commercial airplane enters a 'Bermuda Triangle-esque' area of the Amazon and crashes. The survivors go in search of help, led by (the undisputed leader of the Asylum actor's stable.. think Russell Crowe with a sense of humour) Rhett Giles (who, incidentally, played the Curate in Asylum's WotW). In the party are Lt. Challenger (Bruce Boxleitner- Babylon 5), who is a sinister Airforce man with an agenda, and various other passengers and crew from the plane. Later, they come across Steve Railsback (Lifeforce) who plays a (vaguely Gollum-like) man who is survivor of a previous crash.
Their journey is fraught with many dangers, namely; giant spiders, giant scorpions, dragons (!), nasty natives (that, oddly, reminded me of the Red Hot Chili Peppers) and.. of course.. a giant (and I mean BIG) carnivorous ape.
This movie is thoroughly entertaining throughout. The production values are great, as are the FX (considering they didn't have a $200m budget unlike certain other filmmakers).
The gore is quite restrained (for an Asylum flick) this time around but it has the trademark Asylum humour added amongst the mayhem (Woman:'' That guy has a gun AND cigars..the bastard!''). There is a very imaginative use of the available locations. It doesn't take much to imagine that the characters are in the Amazon.
With a mix of 'Lost', 'King Kong', any number of monster films, Conan-Doyle's story and Asylum's usual loving craftmanship, this film gets 9 out of 10 from me.
David Latt, if you read this and I ever get to the States, can I play a zombie or something in one of your movies.. pretty please?
