Had Spielberg thought years ago of making a Wotw Movie or did he just dream it up in less than a year or so before he started working on it?

The best way to answer that would be to look at the oldest threads in this section of the forum. Click on "Paramount Pictures Movie" at the top there, then use the drop-down menu at the upper left that says "Page 1" and select the bottom page on the list-- the highest number. Look at the threads on that page, and you should get a good idea of the origins of this movie. If none of those gives a definite answer, you may need to look on slightly more recent threads.

He's a great fan of the Pal version and read and enjoyed the book in college. I reckon it's always been one of the projects that he'd like to tackle, but greater excitement in other projects closer to his heart kept delaying him until he had a free schedule and figured that SFX could really do it justice.

Yeah, he said; ''I always wanted to do War of the Worlds.'' So he has been a fan since childhood, he even has the original script of Orson Welles' broadcast on display in his house.
