It's based on the less-is-more principle, like in Jaws you're mind starts to imagine the things for you. That way you can still use your own imagination in this movie. It didn't bother me that much. Tripod less is more? yeah they make all blockbuster movies with that principle in mind now

You can try to supress the truth, Cardinals, but there will come a day! Yes, there will... ooh, nice cushions... there will come a day when... no, I wouldn't mind a custard creme, thanks... what was I saying? Oh, yes, there will come a... no, a footrest wouldn't go amiss at all, thank you! Anyway... Oh no! Feathers! But yes, I still hold by this movie David, and remarkably enough by ol' Cruises' performance - despite him doing everything in real life to annoy me. "Say it aloud! I like Steven Spielberg's War of the Worlds and I'm proud!" Or, say it by this catchy and memorable acronym: "SiaIlSSWotWaIp!" (Actually, saying that out loud only makes you sound like backwards talking man from Twin Peaks. Heigh-ho) "TMWRNJ!" Pete, Dave, I know this great place where you can get help for your affliction [ before the comfy chair is used ]. It's helped many people in the past who've had a similar problem to yours. I know it might be difficult to see the light at the moment but - you can beat it! Here it is - S.W.A. or - SPIELBERGSWOTWANONYMOUS. Don't worry it's not like AA. You can drink all you want to there. It will help you to forget the film! ;D

I think what this movie needed was a extra five minute scene.
You see Robbie run over the hill (thus assuming a role like the brother did in the book). Robbie is scooped up by a tripod and while he is in the basket we see the battle in the background. It would be Robbie not Ray that destroys a tripod with the grenades.

I think the film needs a 2 hour edit, with all the current material cut out of it and totally refilmed faithfully... he he he he ;D
