Yeah,
All this bickering is pretty pointless, either u like it or you dont, and whatever ur reasons for liking or disliking the films, its pretty clear from most of the threads i have read that nobody is going to change their minds about it all. There are now at least 3 threads which are all discussign the same thing (ie debating why the spielberg version is wrong/right and how its a bastardization of the book) we dont need THRE threads all talking bout this, one would be enough and even then it still seems pointles since they are not going anywhere.

instead of griping about the bickering (which i happen to view as lively debate) why not put your own two cents in on the matter? its not the bickering that kills the thread, its the griping about it.

I have put my two cents in and its made no difference, the threads are just going over old ground recycling the same points again and again. I am all for "lively debate" but it has run its course everyone has made their points and to keep going over the same old arguments again and again is pointless.

Well said. I am amazed at how petty people are on this site to be honest - it is bordering on infantile. It looks like Pendragon will end up butchering a golden opportunity yet people still stand behind them no matter what! I couldn't give a damn if Spielberg says they're Martians or not - I am far more excited about his version than the Pendragon one after seeing that truly awful Pendragon trailer. Well said that man! ;D

and i second that.
I'll be honest with you, i really, really, really WAN't the PP version to work, i really hope that Tim Hinds pulls a rabbit out of his hat and says dunn daa! had yer all going there and his version to be brilliant. sadly for many reasons that need no reepeating, i dont see that happening.

Actually, its HinEs I really hope all three adaptations work. Bit of a long shot, as on information received to date, one 'appears' to be half baked, one 'appears' to have precious little to do with the novel we know and love and the other is far off being completed (at least, due to lack of current data on that project, we thankfully can't repeatedly slag that one off : . I am the eternal optimist however... My Hines, Spielberg and Wayne glasses are more than half full

The problem is this .... people are saying that WOTW set in 1897 England can be faithfully reset in to our 2005 world,
OK then what about ID4 set in early 1900 America ...would that work ...no
I will see the film, not my preferred version , but the whole point of the story is lost by modernising it... I have said this before...WE are not meant to be well armed or even a well ordered society in the book , I dare say a couple of WW1 tanks could have steamrolled the cavelry all the way into london in 1898 infact the martians could have quite easily used WW1 equipment and kicked our backsides in 1897.
Unfortunately SS took the easy option ... modern times ... now isn't it a pity he couldn't pump all the millions into a faithfull victorian version,.

ID4 didn't even work in the 1996 setting.
Why do you want the Martians to be push overs? What about the sense of threat?

We are not a well ordered society now BTW One little incident like 9/11 and the world economy nearly tanked through panic. Most people are just two paychecks away from the gutter.

We are rather more well ordered the 1898 England!!! I assume you have a car and you definately have a computer ...!!! PUSH OVERs .....a bunch of martians in WW1 tanks, se5's, Camels would obliterate our 1898 army ... Rourkes drift ........if the Zulus had 1 machine gun that would have been it.... get my point... god know what they would have done with a tank or two ( mind you the did a pretty god job just armed with spears against rifles ....Zulu' pushovers ...I don't think so The Poles in WW2 still used cavelry against German tanks ....wadda know ......they died

The point is in a modern day setting we are to technically advanced , too well armed, better trained
(a trooper in 1898 didn't know house to house tactics, stealth/terroist tactic's , didn't have the use of RPG's , mortars, mines etc SO if the bulk of the weapons get destroyed by EMP ..cop out ... we can still put up a reasonable fight....the poor sods in the book couldn't, all they could do was join the masses
Notice in the book .... after the introduction of the black smoke... there was little (thunderchild excepted) actual fighting anymore .....we couldn't continue the fight ..WE were not mean't to
so is Speilberg going to do away with all the available weaponry in the world

LOL , dude man has been fighting wars for a very very long time, just because they dont have our weapons doesnt mean they couldnt fight, in fact they could probably fight better because they had no dependancy on modern weapons. I bet the hand to hand tactics were a hell of a lot better a thousand years ago because its all they had. All this is academic, SS's movie is going to rock and it WILL be War of the Worlds, big time!

Take away the oil and the electric and both of those things are useless. We are hanging by a thread. The point is that we are MORE dependent on vulnerabe technology now than in 1898.

Hmm. Slightly presumptuous. (He said, stroking his chin in a Rod Serling sort of way) Probably in a hundred and fifty years time when they look back to how we did house to house combat in the early 21st century, they might think us somewhat unsophisticated and predictable. Likewise they would find our weaponry inefficient and far too difficult to target effectively to eliminate sufficient portions of the enemy easily. If we don't grow up by then and are still warring, of course. And if we don't blow ourselves up also. Pete (Thinking of Iain M Banks, 'The Forever War', Halo Jones and the latest 'short circuit' robot weaponry)

Moving the book away from the original time frame is not really such a big deal given the way the world is today. Its not really that different to how it was when the book was originally written, as has been said many time replace the british empire with america and the rest of the themese all fit in nicely around that, with the idea of the worlds most powerful nation being brought to its knees seemingly effortlessley, the idea that none of our technology is capable of defeating them and the whole idea of it being the "route of civilisation, the massacre of mankind" if SS movie captures all tht including tri pods and heat rays and red weed, then for me, its WOTW
