Best Sound Best Sound Editing Best Visual Effects
Let's hope WotW wins all of them. You've got to hand it to them, the technology behind this movie was superb!

Yes the technology behind the movie was superb - I don't think many would disagree with that. It's just the rest of it that's not so appealing.

I don't think Spielberg's WotW will-- or should-- beat out "King Kong" for Visual Effects.

The sound in War of the Worlds is superb, i think it should win in that catergory.

Those tripods, especially the scene where the first one was rising out of the pit, look REAL.

Point, ArmoredTrackLayer. For me the film worked miracles in the first half because I totally believed in the invasion, and was pretty horrified until it petered out to be merely 'okay Hollywood sci-fi' in the end. Pretty good overall, but squandered the stupendous realist first half of horror - up to the farmhouse.
But the effects do deserve that Oscar, and the sound and editing, yes. Those tripods did look real! They were terrifying!
But my fave three films of last year were still...
'Sideways', 'Serenity', 'Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang'

I agree, the visual effects were 'effin marvellous! I still get chills when the first tripod emerges from the ground. It's a shame really, these sorts of films never seem to fare well at the oscars.

I think WETA is likely to beat out ILM in visual FX this year. I really do. (Keeps heathen fingers crossed . I love Star Wars, I really do... but WETA's been kickin' some major ass ). King Kong has made WETA a serious force to be recognized. Yes, ILM did do some killer tripods. But I'm not sure that'll be enough. Plus T.C.'s antics didn't help Spielberg's movie one bit. At least not in the long run. On the other hand, THX and sound editing will score gold for Spielberg. It was indeed very good. Just my 2ยข.

I agree the tripods were very, very good. But overall I think "King Kong"'s effects were more impressive, and certainly seemed more pervasive in the movie than were WotW's.
I feel like this is heresy too for me-- I'm a big "Star Wars" fan-- but I prefer the look of WETA's FX to the too-artificial look of the Star Wars prequel trilogy. Many parts of the final SW film looked like a video game to me. WETA did a great job with "The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe" too.

I don't know about WETA and King Kong. Okay it was impressive but it didn't feel as real as those Tripods from War of the Worlds. I mean putting fantastic animals in a fantasy world is quite cool. But putting horrifying machines in a normal neighborhood and making it as convincing as it was, that's just superb.

It's much harder to create living things with computers so Kong should win best visual effects.

Tripod Yes, but an Ape is a real creature [ even though he's much bigger - he's still a gorilla ] and it's much harder to create convincing humans or real animals by computer than it is to do aliens. Kong looks incredibly convincing.

I do love the sound editing, etc and think it may do well on this count.
The visual effects are great in WotW, but as others have stated there is a lot of competition (especially against WETA with Kong). We'll just have to see.

Oh yeah, for sound effects Spielberg's WotW certainly deserves the Oscar.
