Just a question, have cylinders been confirmed yet? I mean so far we have black smoke, red weed, tripods, tenticles, baskets, ruined house scenes, and an invisible heat ray, sans martians tho, but no heartbreaker for me, at least its THIS that he compromised on, not the others, every writer needs to use Creative License. Anyway, I can find several reasons to not have them, but I really want to see them. So help me out if you can.

I know I'm being pessimistic due to today's 'no martian' revelation, but...
You don't suppose he's going to somehow bypass the landing altogether?
After all, "They're already here."
*argh*

i thought that spielberg mentioned in that interview that the black smoke wasn't going to play a part in his 'new and improved' version.
if i ever get hold of this on dvd, i'm going to edit the title in aftereffects. ET 2 seems a better title to me

I think cylinders are included yes. I base this on what some extras over at the epics form that they were told to run away from a hill as on the other side was a cylinder.
But who knows.

ET 2 seems a better title to me Pshaw. He never described it as a 'new and improved' version. (Two weeks later, a new interview... Spielberg: "I'm sure you'll all love my wacky new and improved version." Me: "Dang.") Black smoke will be in it, due to extras reports. Spielberg just says that it won't play the iconic, large role it had in the book unlike the heat rays and red weed he'll be using. I reckon it will only be in a couple of scenes probably involving military. Hope they're will be cylinders. I do recall the set report you're talking about, Motile, where an extra was told to run from the cylinder. It would certainly make sense regarding the night-time scene on ET, and the report where they began walking away and then broke into a panicked run. It would make sense as to this being what Cruise saw, which would set the film rolling perfectly, and lend to his dialogue and actions with Mani in the spot. Pete

I just thought of sumfink!!!
My head hurts!!!
What if this is ET2 - The return.
And now hes brought his mates.
Joking? No I'm not. If you were sent as an alien scout party to check out the next target of your intergalactic conquest schedule and you got stranded. What would you do?
1 Go insane and kill every human you could wilst knowing that you were outnumbered and had no chance.
2 Or would you bide your time. Make a human friend, a fifth columnist perhaps, who unwittingly helps you to get back to your kind so that you can tell them all you know and come back with some serious kit for wuping with. ie world domination kit a previously mentioned but which is beginning to recieve serious consideration in my own head!
Yep, case closed, sorry to have spoilt the suprise! And the doctor said I was mentally ill for wanted ET to to lose...
I scare myself sometimes!!!

well, since SS in his infinite genius has declared the 'aliens' as being already here, who says they need cylinders at all? maybe they crawl up from their underground lairs

The thing about the cylinder is that it was so iconic and central to the book its hard to imagine a WOTW not to have it, even a loosely based WOTW, even George Pal had the cylinders. You get the opening of the cylinders, you get the instant martian pitt (or in this case 'alien' pitt) and you get the sense of dread watching them arrive night after night.
Im sure whatever meathod they use will work though.

ET II - 'The Revenge'. ET has since been through psychotherapy and now realises that he needs to confront the government goombahs that almost killed him the first film. Wipes out all of earth in the process.
Actually, I'm puzzled by the Martian 'bait and switch thing'. Most film descriptions have called it a 'Martian invasion'. Seriously, what gives?
Not that any of SS's shenanigans would surprise me - but hey, I think that Motile and me at least have an understanding on this point: our objects may differ, but our passion for loathing is unabated.
