Somebody probably already mentioned this before, but why were the birds flying toward the Tripods? I can only guess that it's a dramatic way to portray that they sense something that's dying.

In the novel the birds eat from the dead Martian inside the hood of the Machine...

The birds are attracted by the 'food' the Tripods leave after their rampage. With 'food' I mean dead people. Spielberg came up with this for the dramatical effect.

it's like seagulls following a trawler. They know where they can find food.

I thought it might've been cause they sensed that the aliens were already dying, even though they didn't know it yet. ;D

Hi all, quick hi, 1st post, great site!
Just my take on the birds......
IMO - Spielberg putting his edge on the story, was good to see the birds, but going by Ray's reaction he seemed to be shouting at the soldier that the Tripods shield was down as the birds (some flying towards/some resting on) were having the ride of their lives!
I'll get me coat ;D

That could very well be true. We don't see the birds actually EATING the Martians (or aliens) inside the hoods...

On a slightly related note there is a remake of The Birds in the works.

Its a very "easy win" forumla to update old films. The original birds was great - shame it's being remade. I thought the birds in WOTW were heading away from the tripods. A bit like leaving a disaster site before it happens. I can't stand the bird bit at the end - where Tom Cruise tells the troops the shields are down. As if a large group of army trained soldiers wouldn't have already noticed. Go Tom! Woo!

I'm sure a lot of you have heard that Spielberg's remaking When Worlds Collide. I hope he does it justice. In the ferry scene, Rachel sees a lot of birds heading for a hill which is where the machines were.
