I saw this post on a film music board which stated that the Tripod "honk" is "...a single didgeridoo line put through a pair of processors." Sound designer Richard King, et al. worked on that one sound for months. (I have no idea what a "didgeridoo" is).

Having played (not very well) a didgeridoo I'm not really surprised by this. I can see similarities in my botched efforts. The Aboriginals can get some amazing sounds out of those things. It's a remarkably straightforward instrument and I have no idea how they do it.

Still think they should have used a recording of an old British Rail train horn with Sir Jimmy Savels comment over the top "Now then, now then, now then, this is the age of the tripod".

The 'honk' to me sounds like a distorted ship foghorn.

If you substitute 'British' for 'French' it takes you to an interesting webpage also which is also amusing.
