When the lightning hit the ground and Cruise was feeling the rocks to see if it was warm... he put the rock into his right hand pocket. Why did he need to do this? It wasnt used for anything further on in the film. Just wondered if anyone else saw it?
By the way sorry if this has been mentioned before.

The rock looked slightly crystaline, at this point, having seen no tripods, he perhaps thought it would be a cool thing to show the kids.

He did this because he had been currently watching the U.S premiere of TIME TEAM.

Maybe he though that the warming love in his heart for Katie would help to raise the temperature of the rock

I wondered about that too- it seemed a little too obvious piece of foreshadowing. I half expected the heroic Cruise to throw the pebble and fell a tripod later on...

Just saw the film yesterday, 'twas brilliant! I don't know why critics are shunning it.
Anyway, when the earthquakes and the tripods made their appearance I think Tom, as myself completely forgot about the little rock in his pocket... Ooh er mam!

I thought it was quite natural for Ray to have taken a "souvenir" from a strange and weird occurrence. Why wouldn't he have?

In all the excitement, a lot of people also forgot about Rachel's splinter.
