Im currently reading the 2005 book War Of The Worlds: From Wells To Spielberg by John L. Flynn.
One particular chapter in the book is 'Pendragon', which gives an insight into the film from the new name on the block, master of disaster (no, not Irwin Allen Poseidon Adventure, Towering Inferno) - Timothy Hines.
Here's my personal favourite quotes from the chapter. ALL quotes are in italics.
"Billed as the first authentic movie adaptation and set in Great Britain in 1898, WOTW was shot with great stealth and secrecy" - Yeah, people thought they were a group of holiday makers, the camcorders gave it away.
"In a battle between David versus Goliath" - comment about Hines beating Spielberg
". . . the film fans have been waiting to see for more than 50 years" - yes, and were still waiting
". . . with a budget of $42 million" - replace the $ with tonnes, then add 'bulls**t' at the end
"Our website went up several thousand hits an hour" - yeah, right, we believe that don't we - after each press release for Paramounts movie
". . . liked us to take a poison pill and die" - what Hines thought Paramount wanted them to do
" . . we've got this really great film" - where?, any chance we can see it?
". . . we had our distribution and attorneys, who are making sure Paramount doesn't do any anti-trust tatics to shut us down" - LOL ;D
. . .I wanted (fans) to see a differant version of 'War Of The Worlds', the one based on the book and what Wells (H.G) conceived" - if H.G conceived that version (Pens), he would never have had it published
"my parents came home - naturally - and were saddled with their impression that there was something wrong with their son" - Hines reflecting on his first attempts at film making, setting fire to the house - he was an arsonist in the making
. . .CG-heavy film called 'BUG WARS' that was shot on a $200,000 budget, which he thought would be, at best, something of a cult film. Unfortunately, the distributors oversold the production ' as if it was ALIENS' done on $20 million" - Cult?, not exactly, but similar to a 4 letter word that begins with a 'c'. Thoght I would never see the day when a Hines film would be in the same sentance as a classic James Cameron film.
"Nonetheless, the film did impress a number of Microsoft founders who, several connections later, led Hines to having a film making package worth $42 million, which he felt was enough to allow him to shoot a new version of TWOTW" - DAMN, THATS FUNNY ;D - microsoft, several connections, was he still on dial-up
"In this story, there's a great deal of lessons to be learnned" - Hines talking about the WOTW script
" Armed with a budget of $25 million, a wealth of CG knowledge, they decided to move forward" - What happened to the $45 million, and shame they didn't actually put the wealth of CG knowledge into play
"We're not pirates" - Hines explains himself, while on his wooden leg, with a parrot on his shoulder, while refixing his eye patch
"We made jokes (about Paramount) that they're like Wile E. Coyote strapping themselves into Acme rockets shoes, and were the Road Runner just floating along eating our little birdseed. And here comes the Paramount Coyote, shooting past us and into a wall"
". . we've noticed that you've been kind of designing your artwork to look like ours" - Hines conversation to Paramount Pictures - Did I miss something?
"If they (Paramount) pushed too hard, they could have found themselves shut down becuase they were treading on the ground of a little independant" - Hines comments about Paramount
