Does anyone here know how the sounds of the Martian creatures were done?
Or how the 'ULLAs!!!!' were done?
I'd be interested to know. I have a little idea myself but I'm not sure. Just wondering.

I may be wrong, but I suspect it was done with an electronic vox. Just a guess.

The "Ulla" was done through what's called the "tube". The guitarist played the notes through the electric guitar through an amplifier rigged to a box that contains a speaker unit. In turn, the box has a plastic tube that goes into the guitarists mouth and he forms the sound as if speaking, and the resulting sound is picked up via a standard vocal microphone.

Ok.
What about the Martian creatures themselves? How were they done?

Which sounds do you mean in particular? On the album I can only recall the "Ulla" sounds. Are you talking about instrumentation?

In 'Horsell Common and the Heatray', when the Martians first emerge from their cylinder they make certian 'roaring' and 'growling' sounds.

Oh yes, that's done using the tube as well.

While we're here, how did they do the martian's hammering and their tool box sound fx? Just on a synth?

Jeff's wife Geraldine was responsible for most of the FX.. like the sound of the cylinder lid falling off and so on. The unscrewing itself was achieved by Jeff with a saucepan.

Indeed- the bit of kit that made the Ulla sound is called a 'Heil Talk-Box'. You might recognise it more recently used by Bon Jovi in Living On A Prayer, or Joe Walsh's Rocky Mountain Way.... Incidentally, for our electronic musicians out there, you can get quite a convincing metallic scraping sound by ring modulating a choir patch with white noise- I got a cracking sound on my Kawai K1 when I had it- kind of a gravelly, breathy metallic noise. It works far better on lower notes and will take a bit of time to get the correct ring mod sound from pitching each sample up and down, maybe using sample-and-hold amplitude modulation to add a stuttering sound to it. Or you can just use some saucepans....

The ring modulator was also used to make the Dalek's voice!

Oh! It's something that if you use it in the correct way you can make a creepy SFX! So it's a musical instrument! Thanks for clearing that one up! ;D
