Well I finally saw it last night and what a difference in production quality to the Pendragon Movie! If the Pendragon movie had been made to this level of professionalism we'd all be hailing it a classic instead of moaning and groaning about the failures of Tim Hines.
Having said that, while I thought this was a very good movie, I just didn't find myself getting very excited about it. While the Spielberg movie was gripping from start to finish and had me on the edge of my seat. I didn't feel the same with this one. They never really allowed the tension to build. Even the original 1953 movie was better in that respect.
One thing I liked about this movie was that it had the 'cylinder' landings and when I saw it streak through the sky it reminded me of the 1953 movie. The problem was that when it landed, although there were people crowded around the pit, there was no unscrewing of a lid etc. to build up to the emergence of the Alien. It felt a bit anticlimatic in that respect.
The CGI effects were good though. Tim Hines, you need to watch this movie and take notes. No obvious bluescreening here either. My only problem was the 'crab' like machines just didn't do it for me. They just didn't have that same menacing aspect of the Tripods or even the Swan neck saucers in the original 1953 movie (Even though I consider them heretical to H.G.Wells novell, they at least were menacing). They sort of reminded me of an armoured car with legs not an alien machine!
I didn't really like the ending with the half hidden shot of that funny looking alien dropping down in front of him. It reminded me of a puppet that you would see in a Muppet movie!
I see they tried to add a bit of 'originality' with George coming up with a theory of injecting them with a 'deadly' virus. Wasn't this a plot hole? A vaccine contains non potent forms of a pathogen simply to initiate an immune response, not actually cause disease. Ok I can stretch to see how it may cause harm to the alien it was injected into, but why would it be transmitted to all the others! If this was the case, no one would be given vaccines!
This was a good movie, but it just didn't quite do it for me. It was certainly a lot better than the Pendragon effort I'll give it that though.
PS What's with the Australian Actors and H.G.Wells movies? LOL
Rod Taylor in original Time Machine, Guy pierce in remake, and Rhett Giles in this one playing the pastor!
