It is not illegal in any way to hack your dvd player, nor is it illegal to import from other countries. That said, hacking can invalidate your guarantee. It IS illegal for a UK shop to sell region one discs as they have no BBFC cert, but perfectly ok to import for personal use. In some other European countries, region one discs can be sold in shops without a problem. In fact, it is region coding itself which is verging on illegality as it serves as a barrier to trade and is anti-consumer rights. New Zealand has outlawed it and all dvd players sold there must be all region. Multi region dvd players are easy to buy and in some cases extremely cheap. They're an essential piece of kit for film fans who want limitless choice. I know that I'll be ordering the US editions of both CJ Howell's WOTW and Pendragons film as soon as they're available.
