Eno's Prophecy Theme is the spooky piece that accompanies someone or other having visions during the film proper, it is not the main theme - that is Toto's work. You may very well have read that the Eno piece is the opening track, but whoever wrote that is dead wrong. As for the special effects, some shots do look bad on the VHS recording. That's because VHS is so generally shoddy and incapable of handling subtle colour gradations that it slaughters a lot of what you see. I've got the VHS recording, the first release on DVD and the Special Edition from last year. The DVD editions were not mucked about with or enhanced, other than by having a damn good transfer made. Many scenes that look bad on VHS are infinitely better on the DVD version - believe me, I've played the old compare-and-contrast game! Indeed, I saw Dune twice at the cinema in 1985 (mainly because some half-witted gibbering children in the cinema ruined my first viewing) and the effects were excellent (not uniformly so, but more than Dune's reputation might suggest) - I always regarded the VHS release as particularly poor. I see what you mean about the VHS recording. That's the only one I own and I haven't seen the recent special edition dvd. I think I'll wait until [hopefully] there's a directors cut released. There's no knowing how these things can go though. One minute they'll say they're releasing something - the next it's cancelled altogether. Fingers crossed. I still hope they give it a major fx overhaul though and bring it up to modern standards. I also think it would be a great idea to release a revamped edition in to the cinemas again. This film still has so much potential.

I think the effects had a certain charm, although some times obvious, some effects were very subtle. Remember they didnt have powerful computers to render eye popping CG FX and to go back and re do effects would be detrimental (im not a big fan of the added scenes in the star wars trilogy). Also sometimes redesigning elements could be disastrous, im thinking 'red dwarf'.

Sure the original effects had a certain charm but as long as they release the original unaltered version, which they have done I think it would be a great idea to go back and redo a lot of them. I thought the revamped scenes in the S.WARS special editions were largely an improvement. Lucas's mistake though was to start changing things around as well as improving shots. I thought the revamped death star battle was a huge improvement over the original effects.

Fallingstar, this is the most recent DVD (released last year): www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000AISLP/qid=1114425159/sr=2-3/ref=sr_2_11_3/202-4130732-7295053It has been remastered, but otherwise untampered with. Picture quality is superb. I have to admit to being a bit of a purist with special effects, I don't like them being 'improved' in later releases. That only gives a false impression to newcomers. Lucas's treatment of 'Star Wars' is an object lesson (someone else on another thread mentioned ET as well) - muck about making 'improvements' whilst withholding the originals, the fat-necked bearded git. I accept a film's limitations as being of-their-time.
