Spielberge fans and puritans beware.... Right. After a long wait it looks as if we have finally had our deliverance. Out of the blue weve got a 4th modern movie incarnation of our beloved book. But unlike the Spielberg version, which has taken enormous liberties with the book, this version is to all intents and purposes the most faithful modern version yet. The word is that the creatures although having 4 legs than three do indeed come from mars in cylinder like ships. not beamed underground on bolts of lightning. The whole thing seems very professional yet low budget with half decent actors and effects. C Thomas Howell looks sutably grizzled and stressed as the 'narrator' with a more low key tone to his looks than Mr Cruise who looks positivly over acting in his scenes. people are saying that this is an ID4 rip off yet all ive seen in just the advertising pap on the DVD movie packaging. This brings me to the next point. Sci fi channel is involved with this project, as are low budget horror producers Asylum. With the SciFi involved there is a good chance of a UK and euro release which means that unlike Pendreagon quotes to the opposite deals CAN be reached and copyright isnt the issue. Sorry Tim you dropped the ball mate this little movie has show you that it can be done. In anticipation this film has gone straight into my No 2 position. Jeff W first. SS version third, PP an also ran. Go CT GO SCI FI! ;D ;D ;D

Same here: of course I reserve the right to change my opinion after seeing a trailer . I'm sure it will be cheesy, but at least it will be expectedly and understandably cheesy.

A bit silly perhaps, but personally I've never understood how a tripod is supposed to move. Do they dynamically balance a huge fighting machine on two legs while moving the third into its new position?
At least with six legs it's pretty obvious, since insects can do that in the real world. I've yet to see a tripod in nature, other than a three-legged dog that didn't seem to be too good at walking.

Rusti, some damn good points there. And who cares about the six legs? George Pal's had none and I don't hear people griping.
Amazing how this cheap & cheerful bit of exploitation tat has slipped in without a ripple. Okay, it looks cheesy, but there's also an element of professionalism to it.
I'd give it a chance.

The key word here is: spirit This version oodles more spirit and bravery than the SS and PP versions. The JW version comes out on top but i get the feeling that money is a big motovator which reduces the overall 'spirit level' PP is just an also ran: Rob lock the PP forum we dont need it any more mate...

Call me a puritan or picky or whatever you care to. I will not be able to get around the fact that the FM will not have 3 legs. Sorry.

If they manage to get the plot reasonably faithful I might just let them off the extraneous legs. At the end of the day it is becoming clear that there isn't going to be a completely faithful to the novel movie. Each film so far has it's own variation on the theme and differs from the book in different ways. With this in mind, I'll be scoring each film on how close to HG's original plot they get more than anything else. That and how entertaining I find each film when I see it.

I don't see it as silly. A segway manages to keep upright with only two wheels. Remember these are advanced beings who have mastered this kind of engineering. While it may seem to us that it is not the most efficient method of walking we can be led to assume that there was a reason they designed their machines that way. Just like any good Scifi (2001 comes to mind), if we were visited by alien beings, we would not immediately know the reasons behind what we see since we are seeing the story from a human viewpoint with human conjecture.
Actually the machines in the 1953 version *did* have 3 legs, only they were not physical. They were the 3 beams that lifted the device of the ground. Of course I do agree this is still not really a true 3 legged fighting machine.

. . . but the legs were there non the less and the legs are mentioned in the film, so we have to take there word for it - Cut a long story short, they had legs.

A segway doesn't weigh god-knows how many tons. It's also been known to fall over in embarassing ways in photo shoots . In that case, they should know that four legs would be much more sensible than three. Though it's possible that the tripods were the Martian equivalent of the Osprey tilt-rotor plane... something that no-one in the military really wanted because it didn't work, but the Martian Congress forced it on them anway .

I personally don't think a tripod having three legs is silly. I think it makes them different. It's fiction, so it doesn't matter how they are supposed to balance - we can leave that to our imaginations.
