Assuming were talking about the 2005 movie, I just was wondering about these points.
Why did the aliens want blood. Everyone sais its not fertilizer, but then why would it show them extracting it, then spraying red fluid over their weeds.
Why the weeds?
If the aliens were so intelligent, why didnt they try to comunicate? They had a language, as it showed in the basement.
What happened to the son throughout half the movie?
Where did the tripods come from? They were positioned at key junctures in our society, so they had to have been placed recently, and they couldnt have "grown"(assuming their biological), due to the reasons the aliens died, the bacteria.
They were caught in the basement for days, if not weeks. Why didnt the bacterias work in that time?
WHY WOULD BACTERIAS, WHICH ONLY WORK ON CERTIN SPECIES, EFFECT ALIENS!?!?!?!
Why did the aliens spread the red vines? MY only guess would be that the aliens ate the vines and grew the vines with human blood(as whenever it came into contact with human blood it grew), but then that means the aliens need humans to survive. Even IF ANYTHING could have evolved that way, then how would they live without us? Did they populate millions of worlds with humans and just go around "harvesting"?
Thats all I can think of for now, but its 230 in the morning.

In order of asking:
The blood was to help the weed grow, the weed was changing the atmosphere, they didnt need to comunicate, who really cares about the son, the point is simply that they dont come from here, bacterial exposure of lethal proportion takes time and we dont know how long they were in the basement, there are millions upon millions of bacteria in the world that will harm something without immunity to them.
Like the idea of them planting us on different worlds to farm, a bit SG1.

Thats why Cruise does not look tall in WOTW, he's constantly standing in a plot hole during filming ;D

Thats why Cruise does not look tall in WOTW, he's constantly standing in a plot hole during filming ;D Perhaps it was a good thing Spielberg didn't do a faithful adaptation of the book. Otherwise that hole would've been what remains of Horsell Common Assuming were talking about the 2005 movie, I just was wondering about these points. Why did the aliens want blood. Everyone sais its not fertilizer, but then why would it show them extracting it, then spraying red fluid over their weeds. The only conclusion i can come up with is that human blood was somehow a fertilizer for their weed. If it shows them spraying weed with blood then surely that must be the case. I doubt they'd spray the weed just to get a nice 'iron' scent to it. Because it's 'loosely' adapted from the book, which had the redweed in it. Although correct me if i'm wrong, i think in the book the red weed was accidentally brought over by the Martians. That it didn't seem to prove to have any kind of function for them. The filmakers decided to try a different route (should it be root ) with the red weed. If the aliens were so intelligent, why didnt they try to comunicate? They had a language, as it showed in the basement. Well they were shown to be communicating in the basement scene for starters. The loud Tripod call was another sign of them communicating. Perhaps they have something similar to our radio? If you meant to communicate with mankind. Then simply they're weren't interested. They were here to harvest us and take our lands, nothing more. We wouldn't communicate with an ant/hornet nest before dislodging it. Although i wouldn't compare the gap between mankind & the invaders with that of men and ants. We're a little more smarter than that What happened to the son throughout half the movie? From what we can see, just as the armoured vehicles press forward a group of refugees stupidly run amongst them. Perhaps he made a sharp turn and went with some other people? Perhaps he somehow hitched a ride with a military unit and made it to Boston that way. We see the military (whether National Guard, Army, Marine Corp or bit of everything) securing Boston when Ray & Screaming Sheila arrive. Where did the tripods come from? They were positioned at key junctures in our society, so they had to have been placed recently, and they couldnt have "grown"(assuming their biological), due to the reasons the aliens died, the bacteria. Even though it raises the question of how people like Ogilvy got their information. We have to go along with the assumption that it's a plot device in letting us now certain information on the invaders, since it is pretty scarce throughout the film. For instance we're told they've been planning this for a million years. So we could assume the Tripods have been there for all that time. I'm not sure whether you could say they were placed at 'key junctures'. I think they just popped up randomnly, then once they were able to communicate and co-ordinate things. They'd head for the big population centres. Also since the narration says we're being watched. That would imply they'd know where all the big cities and towns are. Maybe the Tripods had grown over a certain period of time. It may explain why the Tripods look bigger in certain scenes. Although i'd put that down either to a technical error in editing, or the fact that their legs may be able to retract/extend. They were caught in the basement for days, if not weeks. Why didnt the bacterias work in that time? I would say days not weeks. Well it takes time for someone to become 'sick' so to speak. The bacterias would've been slowly eating away at their immune system. Hence why some Tripods/Aliens died sooner than others. WHY WOULD BACTERIAS, WHICH ONLY WORK ON CERTIN SPECIES, EFFECT ALIENS!?!?!?! Even though in most cases bacteria/viruses will only affect certain species. They can 'jump' and infect other species as you know. Such as CJD & Bird Flu. Considering the Earth would have so many forms of Bacteria. Where the aliens haven't been here in a long time, with no immunity it would only be a matter of time. Since the Tripods are clearly seen cultivating the red weeds, you can only assume it must have some sort of purpose/function. Perhaps it's a source of nutrition for them? Perhaps the red weed changes the atmosphere somehow to suit their needs. Although judging from the basement scene, i'm not sure about that. It's possible they populated other worlds with Humans or similar lifeforms. If they need Humans in order to keep up a supply for their red weed. then maybe they weren't here for total extermination. Perhaps more of a culling to control the population. Then we would be easier to manage if we were penned in. Rather than risk wild Humans running around causing havoc. Anyway i hope my reply at least offered another insight into the machinations of WOTW!
