Does anyone remember the old ZX Spectrum game? I seem to remember many a happy hour spent dodging heat-ray with my little stick man. Anyone got a copy of it?

The most annoying infuriating way to resolve a martian encounter! Yet couldn't stop playing it except that I gave up when I got killed after finding the 'man on putney hill' bit.
Original idea tho.

Hehehehe, I remember this one from when i was about 13 years old....heres a bit of usless information, I remember that when you came across a tripod, you would stay still untill he fires twice and then run to the left without stopping and he would always miss you and you would escape. Also if you tried to run under his legs although his heat ray wouldnt be able to reach you because of where he was facing, you would always get killed though by the time you reached the end of the screen without being hit by anything . I actually have a copy of it for the spectrum emulator i run on my pc (although ive never played it since my spectrum years) i got it with a bundle of about 3000 spectrum games. If you want a copy of it then ill gladly e-mail you the file if you leave your e-mail address, the file itself is very small, also if you want a copy of the spectrum emulator to run it then once again let me know.

[glow=purple,2,300]I too have the emulator and game on a a Speccy Classix bundle. There's just one problem:
THERE'S NO S*DDING INSTRUCTIONS!!!
What are you supposed to do? What are they key controls?
I gave up trying to figure it out, and played Attic Attack instead! [/glow]

Some septrum emulators let you define your keys, try this on, emuzwin, its the best one i have found, you can download it from www.emufanatics.com/news.php func=emu&file=EmuZWin i think. Anyway if i remember right you used the spectrum cursor keys which were 4,5,6,7 (i may be wrong with the numbers but i think im right in saying that) or if it states cursor joystick then it opt for that option as it goes on the same keys. In the game you had to pick up wine and food, along the way but i cant remember the button to do this, im sure there must be an emulator site around showing the keys to use tho, just try to google it and see what happens.

Right i decided to play the game for a little while to sus out the keys (lol, memories are coming flooding back now) so here they are. at the very beggining of the game theres a muliple choice question, to get onto the rest of the game you must choose "hide in the bushes" each day that passes you must get to a specific place at a specific time to get into another multiple choice question to progress further and compleat the game, if you miss this im not sure how the outcome fo the game will progress....if i remember, the soundtrack gives you lots of clues as to where you should be and when. when night comes you must find a house with the door open and stant infront of it and enter to get some sleep or you will die of exhastion. Wine and food are picked up by standing nest to it whilst facing it and picking it up , also you must eat and drink regularly or you will die. After day 3 red weed will appear, so dont walk onto it or once again you will die, if you come across a tripod (which is quite regularly) dont move until he fires twice and the hold down the left key until you reach the end of the screen, you do still sometimes die on the second fire of the ray but usually this works and blindly running and stopping will get you killed, as a matter of fact you have only a few chances to live, what a nutsty existance eh? your probably bettor off dead, at least you can get some peace. The keys are 5 - left 6 - down 7 - up 8 - right E - eat D - drink T - time I - Inventory Q- quit
There are more but i can be bothered to try them all out so you will have to figure out the rest for yourself.

Thanks. I have never heard of this game, so I will try it. Sounds too easy to die, though.

You're right about being too easy to die. I was busy fumbling with the keys and died several times!

THE GAME
The Earth has been invaded by the Martians. Having studied our planet they have landed and prepared themselves to colonise it. All is swept before them by their mighty technology and savage Heat-Ray. Huge Fighting Machines stride across the countryside, bringing chaos and death as they pass. The Martian Red Weed takes hold and begins to change the very nature of the land. Handling Machines feed by capturing people, draining their blood and injecting it into their own veins.
You leave your home in search of Carrie, the girl you love, and travel through the Home Counties and the deserted streets of London. You must conserve your energies as there are testing times ahead. Every Martian has a life of its own and all of the events will eventually affect you, even if they happen far away.
Your strength and state of mind will be affected by everything around you and one shock too many could push you over the brink. As time passes the landscape becomes more alien. Red Weed, the vegetation which gives Mars its red appearance, takes root on Earth. Like a slimy red animal it creeps and crawls across the land with living scarlet feelers that ensnare its prey and holds on until it dies of starvation. You can pull free, but it will sap your energy.
Your object is to discover the six locations during the six playing days. Each location must be visited in correct sequence and on the right day in order to reach the Martian encampment on the seventh and so complete the game.
To aid you the special locations to be visited are featured in their correct order in Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of "The War of The Worlds". Musical phrases also from the recording will help you on your journey.
CONTROLS
Movement is controlled using the following keys: 5 - Left 6 - Down 7 - Up 8 - Right Use the 'Up' key to move into houses with open doors.
Text commands: The instructions are as follows: G - Get Q - Quit E - Eat D - Drink I - Invent T - Time S - Status
All other text responses will be prompted on screen.

The game was awful really but it did actually capture the atmosphere of the book.

What? Like it was made 100 years ago? ;D Oh jeez, now I feel old ! I remember going to a computer show in London ("Royal Horticultural Hall" rings a abell), I'd already spent my money when I found the WOTW game on a trade stand. I wanted it so much. Only later did I read the bad reviews, and now thanks to the internet I realise what a lucky escape I had. Can't remember which games I bought that day but I'm sure they were better than WOTW ! Kev.
